They renamed PCOS this week.
After 11 years of research, 22,000 patient and clinician voices, and a global consensus published in The Lancet, polycystic o***y syndrome is now polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome — PMOS.
Here’s why this matters more than a name change:
The old name reduced a whole-body hormonal and metabolic disorder to “cysts on the ovaries.” That single misnomer is responsible for decades of missed diagnoses, dismissed symptoms, and women being told to “just lose weight” while their insulin, androgens, and cardiometabolic risk quietly compounded.
PMOS is metabolic. PMOS is endocrine. PMOS is multi-system. And it requires a clinician who treats it that way.
