Be Cautious When Using Heating Pads
Heating pads are a common tool that many of us rely on at various points in our lives.
In my 19 years of serving clients, I’ve observed only a few instances of excessive heating pad use. Out of curiosity, I researched to see if others have encountered similar issues, and the answer is affirmative.
This condition is known as *erythema ab igne*, which translates to “redness from fire.” It’s sometimes called toasted skin syndrome.
This low-grade thermal injury results from repeated or prolonged exposure to heat, manifesting as reddish, brownish, or mottled discoloration on the skin. It can also indicate irritation in the underlying tissues. While it’s not considered a traditional burn, it represents chronic heat damage to the skin and superficial layers.
Typically, heating pads are utilized for:
✨️Alleviating aches and pains
✨️Enjoying relaxation
I fully support their use, but it's essential to exercise caution.
Research suggests that 15 to 20 minutes of heating pad use is sufficient. To enhance safety, consider using a heating pad with a timer, or set a separate timer if one isn’t included.
Here are some alternative ways to enjoy heat:
✨️Warm baths or showers (you can add essential oils or bath salts)
✨️Contrast therapy (alternating heat and cold)
✨️Moist heat packs (used briefly and on low settings)
Remember, pain and tightness are signals from your body, urging you to address the underlying issues.
