A new study recently published in JAMA, tracked middle-aged and older adults across several years, examining patterns in sleep duration and bedtime habits. At the end of the study period, participants wore continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for 14 days to assess how their long-term sleep behaviors related to blood sugar stability. They found that people with consistently shorter sleep and/or late bedtimes showed greater fluctuations in blood glucose throughout the day — even in the absence of diagnosed diabetes!!!!

A good night of sleep is, for so many reasons, paramount to our health. Here are some tips:

ESTABLISH A REGULAR SLEEP/WAKE CYCLE:
Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
AIM FOR 7-9 HOURS OF SLEEP.
CREATE A RELAXING BEDTIME ROUTINE:
Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed.
Take a warm bath or shower.
Read, listen to calming music, or practice meditation.
Dim the lights in your bedroom.
Use an eye mask and earplugs to block out noise and light.
PREPARE YOUR BEDROOM FOR SLEEP:
Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
Invest in a comfortable bed and pillows.
Remove electronic devices from your bedroom or turn them off before bed.

There have been plenty of studies that show that cardiovascular activity will promote brain health. Recently there has been a randomized-controlled study regarding the impact of resistance training in adults from 65-85 years of age. The results showed that resistance training may effectively improve cognition! Specifically, slowing the neuronal loss in the hippocampal region of the brain in adults with higher risk of degeneration. The hypocampus plays a crucial role in several cognitive functions such as memory consolidation and retrieval.

Perhaps a good weekly goals is to do aerobic activity 3-4 times per week and weight training 3 times per week with a focus on larger muscle groups. Also aim to lessen the load of glucose in your bloodstream which impacts all tissues including the brain. Alzheimers is now said to be type III Diabetes. Bread, pasta, cookies--->my absolute favorites!!!! DANG!

HIPS ARE ON MY MIND, THANKS FOR ASKING FACEBOOK. Weakness, bursitis, abnormal gait.....everything hip. This is something that is so common in my world. I see it in my practice as a PT, I see it in my family and friends. It is so common!!
I even have noticed an old hip injury recently resurface. I have to consider the pain discussion here. For me, in particular, I have been under enormous stress and have been working harder physically than I have in quite a few years. There has not been a specific injury, which is one of the clues that lead me to think about my pain as being of neuro origin.
I am working on my hip joint, on strengthening of the tissues that surround the hip joint and my brain. I say to myself quite frequently, 'it's OK buddy, you are strong, you are healthy'. I still have the discomfort, but since I began doing all of these techniques, I feel better. I suspect that if I just said that I am OK and believed it, I would have gotten better as well.
So, that has been on mind!!! 🙂
