Having two kidneys is helpful - if one fails, the other can take over. But if both stop working, survival depends on dialysis to filter the blood or a kidney transplant.

When a and recipient pair are not a good match, they can swap with other pairs to get a better match. This is known as kidney paired (or paired exchange).
Similarly, donation chains allow for multiple pairs to swap donors with nondirected donors, that is people who are willing to donate and have no designated recipient.
