Stay safe and stay warm, Houston aviation community! 🧊✈️ With an Arctic blast and Winter Storm Warning in effect for the Houston area starting tonight, Saturday, January 24, 2026, through Monday, January 26, the Aviation Medical Clinic wants to ensure our pilots, crew, and travelers are prepared for the extreme cold and potential ice.
🥶 Aviation Health & Safety Tips for the 2026 Freeze
Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: If you are using heaters or generators during power outages, ensure they are operated in well-ventilated areas and away from windows.
Dress in Layers: High winds and temperatures dropping into the low 20s can lead to rapid heat loss. Use moisture-wicking base layers and cover all exposed skin with hats, gloves, and scarves to prevent hypothermia.
Watch for Icy Surfaces: Houston roads and airport ramps are not designed for winter weather. Even small amounts of ice can make walking and driving extremely dangerous.
Stay Hydrated & Fueled: Cold weather suppresses thirst, but your body needs more energy to stay warm. Keep high-energy snacks and plenty of water in your emergency kit.
🛫 Airport & Flight Updates
Both George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Hobby (HOU) airports are preparing for deicing operations.
Major airlines, including American and Southwest, have issued travel waivers for the Houston area. Check your airline's app for real-time status before heading to the airport.
