What is extracorporal shockwave therapy? It’s also known as low intensity shockwave therapy and it’s been used successfully for over a decade for a variety of conditions, including orthopedic conditions. It is a non-invasive treatment that involves delivery of shockwaves to injured soft tissue to reduce pain release growth factors, and promote healing. It is also shown to be very effective in the treatment and break up of scar tissue, which may increase range of motion to levels, not experienced since prior to injury. The technology works by accelerating a projectile in the handpiece which generates a mechanical pressure wave. This wave is transferred to the body by an applicator head, and which radiates out in the tissue. The mechanical stress causes tissue reactions, breaks up adhesions, releasing growth factors, and promoting quicker healing. It improves local blood flow and breaks down calcium deposits adhesions, and relaxes connective tissue. If shockwave therapy is right for you acute issues will typically require 1 to 3 treatments over 5 to 7 days while chronic issues will typically require 4 to 8 treatments over 3 to 5 days. In addition to joint injuries, shockwave therapy may be beneficial for erectile dysfunction. If you’re curious about whether this is right for you please call the office at 281-724-1271.
