With Houston’s record-setting population growth, the national nursing shortage has become a pressing local issue.

“At HCA Houston Healthcare, we are improving systems of care by advancing the future of nursing, right here in our city,” said Michelle Bookout, DNP, chief nursing executive for HCA Houston Healthcare. “This includes being proactive in addressing the growing nursing shortage by launching formal education programs to equip existing and future nurses with the skills they need to thrive in today’s dynamic healthcare landscape.”

Attracting nurses requires more than filling vacancies—it means creating an environment where they can grow and have influence.

? Nearly 1.2 million women in the U.S. give birth by cesarean section (C-section) each year – about one-third of all pregnancies, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a part of the American Medical Association’s What Doctors Wish Patients Knew™ series, Dr. Cindy Celnik, assistant national medical director of Women’s Services for our broader HCA Healthcare network, shares helpful insights about C-sections – from when they’re medically necessary to how advancements are making recovery smoother.

Across HCA Healthcare hospitals, enhanced surgical recovery (ESR) protocols are helping improve outcomes for C-section patients by promoting faster healing, shorter hospital stays and reducing opioid use – all through evidence-based care.

While is often misperceived as a women’s disease, 1 in 726 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, says Dr. Ali Mazloom, a radiation oncologist with HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress.

"Most men don't think they can develop breast cancer," Dr. Mazloom notes. "So, when they get a nodule on their breast or start having signs that can be attributed to breast cancer, like ni**le discharge, they ignore it."

We are proud to officially launch our new Blood Cancer and Cell Therapies Program, providing advanced diagnosis, care and treatment for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Under the direction of Dr. Ram Kamble, a nationally renowned hematology/oncology specialist, the program offers high-quality, comprehensive blood cancer care for families south of the Texas Medical Center.

“This is a special population of patients who need us,” said CEO Todd Caliva. “Adding blood cancer treatment to our already robust oncology program has been in the works for many years, but we needed the right leader — and now we have him.”

Dr. Kamble’s team--which was celebrated during a special event last week--includes advanced practice nurses, transplant coordinators, social workers, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, and other specialists who work together to provide comprehensive, personalized care.

screening looks different at every age. Experts recommend that you start talking with your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer as early as age 25. Depending on your family history or other factors, you may qualify for genetic counseling, earlier screening or both.

If you have a higher risk of breast cancer, screening may begin as early as age 30, or 10 years before the age a close relative was diagnosed. Because each person’s health needs are unique, it’s important to talk with your doctor about a personalized approach to screening.

Organizations that set medical screening guidelines now universally recommend starting mammogram screening at age 40 if you have an average risk of breast cancer. Across our broader HCA Healthcare network, caregivers perform approximately 1.5 million mammograms each year, helping patients take proactive steps toward early detection and better outcomes. We recently celebrated the groundbreaking of our expansion project — an 18-month labor of love that will provide more services to the Clear Lake community.
This expansion, set to be complete by late 2026, will add an additional 132,000 square feet to our hospital, and will offer area residents:
*A 30-bed neuroscience floor.
*A 30-bed intermediate care unit (IMCU). An IMCU is for patients less critically ill than those who require an intensive care (ICU).
*An additional 30-bed medical surgical unit.
* An additional 30-bed floor for our cancer program with the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network.
*We are also doubling the capacity of our Women’s Services by adding a horizontal tower on the East side of our campus.

This much-needed project will increase our bed capacity by 54 beds, making us a 586-bed hospital.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by our chief executive officer, Todd Caliva. “This expansion is another exciting example of the way we show up for our community,” he said. “Not just our community of today, but our community of tomorrow.”

About every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with blood cancer, according to Blood Cancer United. Learn about the main types of blood cancer and common symptoms from Dr. Navneet Majhail – a hematologist and physician in chief of blood cancers for the HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Cancer Network.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including 11 blood cancer treatment programs that make up the Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network. Through this network, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential treatment option is a blood and marrow transplant or cellular therapy (also known as CAR T-cell therapy). The Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network is the nation's leading provider of these highly specialized and innovative therapies conducting over 1,500 procedures annually.
