Sacramento/Weed Volunteer Fire Department The Sac/Weed Volunteer Firefighters are dedicated to the protection of life and property in the rural areas of the Sacramento Mountains.

The Sacramento Mountain area is a beautiful evergreen forest with majestic views and a genuine treasure in our great state. The vast extent of this area is heavily wooded forest and wild fires remain a constant threat. It is the duty of the Sac/Weed Volunteer Fire Department (SWVFD) to providing the highest level of public safety for our community. We protect lives and property through Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Prevention and Public Education. We ask for the community’s trust, and support as we venture forth building and protecting its interests. It is our most heartfelt desire, that you embrace our department as we commit to keeping you and your property safe. Respectfully, Sac/Weed Volunteer Fire Department

Dear Residents of the Sac/W**d and Mayhill Communities,

We’re reaching out today with important news about the future of your local fire service—news that reflects our continued commitment to protecting the lives, property, and natural beauty of our mountain communities.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Sac/W**d Volunteer Fire Department and the Mayhill Volunteer Fire Department will officially merge to form Otero County Fire District 5.

This change is part of a broader effort by Otero County to improve coordination, training, and resource sharing among all fire departments across the region. For our communities, it means a stronger, more unified emergency response team—without sacrificing the local presence and dedication you’ve come to rely on.

Here’s what you can expect:

All fire stations will remain active and staffed by the same dedicated volunteers who have served you for years.
Joint training and shared resources will strengthen our ability to respond quickly and effectively to fires, medical calls, and other emergencies.
Better access to funding, equipment, and insurance ratings through the consolidated district structure.

This merger isn’t about losing identity—it’s about gaining strength. Sac/W**d and Mayhill have long shared the same values: service, resilience, and looking out for one another. Now, we’ll operate under one name, but with twice the coverage and cooperation.

We understand you may have questions, and we’d love to hear from you. We will be hosting our first official joint Business Meeting on July 1, 6PM at the W**d Community Center. Come meet your fire personnel, learn more about what’s changing (and what isn’t), and hear how this transition will directly benefit you.

Thank you for continuing to support your local volunteer fire departments. Whether you live in W**d, Sacramento, Mayhill, or anywhere in between, we’re proud to serve you—and proud to take this next step forward together.

With respect and gratitude,

Michael Jones
Fire Chief, Sac/W**d Volunteer Fire Department

Henry Brauchle
Assistant Fire Chief, Mayhill Volunteer Fire Department

General information prior to a controlled burn in Otero County. This is the official check list from Otero County has set in place on

http://www.co.otero.nm.us/Search?searchPhrase=Open burning
The number to reach Otero County Sheriffs Office is 15754372210.

Remember to call OCSO prior to burning and your controlled burn can start 1 hour after sunrise and has to be completely extinguished 1 hour prior to sunset.
The main reason for burning during the day as opposed to at night is due to inversion causing smoke to settle low at night and possibly entering nearby housing ventilation systems.
Controlled burns are only for NATURALLY GROWN VEGETATION ON THE PROPERTY. NOTHING ELSE IS PERMITTED TO BURN SUCH AS TRASH, PROCESSED WOOD, CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL, ETC.

Always remember if you have a controlled burn and it begins to get out of control use nearby water sources if available and call 911 for immediate fire department response.

Remember to always be safe and pre plan.
