Near-point copying is difficult for a dyslexic child due to deficits in working memory and processing speed. Imagine slowly copying โ€œLi,โ€ looking back up - โ€œgh - wait. How do I make a โ€˜gโ€™? Iโ€™ve lost my place!โ€ This is one of the reasons having a word bank is not helpful. (This is a 3rd grade - A/B student)

A dyslexic child can learn to read if taught in the Orton-Gillingham method. This is typically a 2 1/2 to 5 year process. Because dyslexia can be mild, moderate, severe, or profound - the child's brain must dictate the pace. "Go as fast as you can, but as slow as you must." Anna Gillingham

People with dyslexia are often
"out of the box thinkers." They can't learn the way they are taught so they figure it out and find other ways and workarounds.
This is often one of their strengths.

True story. A ninth grader arrives for testing. He has had 5 years of dyslexia tutoring and graduated from this particular centerโ€™s program. The result of his evaluation? - 1st grade reading level. A house cannot be built upon sand. This is one of the reasons it is so very important to have a complete battery of tests and an accurate medical diagnosis for dyslexia. Strengths and weaknesses must be evaluated (by an experienced expert in the field of dyslexia) to determine where remediation must begin. Misspent time and finances - time that cannot be returned to this bright, dyslexic child.
