Near-point copying is difficult for a dyslexic child due to deficits in working memory and processing speed. Imagine slowly copying “Li,” looking back up - “gh - wait. How do I make a ‘g’? I’ve lost my place!” This is one of the reasons having a word bank is not helpful. (This is a 3rd grade - A/B student)

True story. A ninth grader arrives for testing. He has had 5 years of dyslexia tutoring and graduated from this particular center’s program. The result of his evaluation? - 1st grade reading level. A house cannot be built upon sand. This is one of the reasons it is so very important to have a complete battery of tests and an accurate medical diagnosis for dyslexia. Strengths and weaknesses must be evaluated (by an experienced expert in the field of dyslexia) to determine where remediation must begin. Misspent time and finances - time that cannot be returned to this bright, dyslexic child.
