Winter Car Seat Safety Tips: Keeping Kids Safe & Warm

Winter coats and snowsuits may seem cozy, but they should never be worn under a car seat harness.

Why? In a crash, bulky coats flatten instantly, creating extra space in the harness. This can allow a child to slip out of their seat — a serious safety risk.

How to keep your child warm AND safe:
*Buckle your child in without bulky layers
*Use thin, warm clothing instead
*Place a coat or blanket over the harness after your child is buckled

These tips apply to all ages — even adults should avoid puffy coats under seat belts.

Stay warm. Stay safe.

Today, we had the pleasure of meeting Brooke High School senior Elliot McDonald, whose kindness will be felt by many when they need it most.

As her senior project, Elliot spent months creating 23 hand-made fleece knot blankets for patients at the WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center Cancer Center, inspired by a loved one receiving care here.

Elliot, the daughter of Heather and David McDonald of Colliers, plans to pursue biochemical engineering and enjoys figure skating and playing on the Brooke High School golf team.

Thank you, Elliot, for your compassion and dedication to our community—we know you’ll do great things! 💚💛 (Elliot presented the blankets to Tina Rigby, BSN, RN--Nurse Manager of the Cancer Center)

WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center is proud to congratulate Dakota Collins, Patient Navigator, on passing her certification exam to become a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional (PMH-C).

Dakota’s advanced education and training strengthen our ability to provide the highest quality mental health care to our perinatal patients. This certification directly supports our compliance with the Standards of Care outlined in the Maternal Mental Health Bundle through the National Quality Collaborative Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM).

Her expertise represents a significant asset to WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center and a valuable resource for the community we serve.

Dakota's certification is funded through scholarships provided by the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership—an investment that will have lasting benefits for our patients and families.

Congratulations to Dakota! We are so lucky you are here.
