TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Books, books and more books! 📕 We could not recommend books enough! Books are amazing for kids of ALL AGES and works on so many skills:

📚 Grasping skills to turn the page
📚 Bilateral integration
📚 Finger isolation when pointing at pictures
📚 Visual scanning skills
📚 Imagination, creativity and attention

Work on strengthening the belly and eye muscles by having your kiddo read while lying on his/her belly.

Does your kiddo need some heavy work? Have your kiddo lift and carry books from one part of the room to a cozy corner or bed to read. Have them carry it back! 💪🏻

Does your kiddo need movement breaks? Have your kiddo get one book, then do an animal walk, jump, or run across the room, read the book, and then do another movement back. Make it into an obstacle course! 🏃‍♂️

Reading can be a great activity to work on sharing, turn taking and social skills. Have an older sibling read a book to a younger sibling. Or have kids take turns being the reader. Some of our favorite books are pictured above to also work on self-regulation, frustration tolerance and social skills.

Reading is a great calming activity to add into a bedtime routine to calm your kiddos sensory system and get them ready for bed! 😴

🌎 If Deanna was not an OT, she would be a world traveler, trying new things and food!
☀️ Her favorite weather is sunny!
🗣️ She loves working with kids, collaborating with the speech therapists at WPST and being creative! 🧠
🚶‍♀️ Outside of work she loves going on walks, especially with her dog 🐶, and trying new restaurants. 🍴

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Dot markers are a simple toy to have at home and on the go that target so many great skills

🖍Grasping skills
🖍 Early in-hand manipulation skills of screwing and unscrewing caps
🖍 Bilateral integration
🖍 Pre-writing skills
🖍 Visual motor skills
🖍 Proprioceptive input

Dot markers are a great way to introduce your kiddos to drawing and begin working on those grasping skills.

Pro tip: place the paper on a vertical surface to work on upper body strengthening, endurance, bilateral integration and visual motor skills.

Level 🆙 those fine motor skills and tape the dot markers onto the table with painters tape. Your kiddo will need to pinch and peel the tape off to get the marker! 🤏🏻

Wanna add gross motor skills and increase your child’s attention?! Place the markers on one side of the room and the paper on another. Every time your child goes through the obstacle course they need to get a new marker to color in the paper.

Want to work on color recognition and visual perceptual skills? Draw circles of different colors on a piece of paper. Have your child match the dot marker to the colored circles and place a dot in each color that matches! This is a great way to work on visual scanning skills as well! 👀

AND don’t forget to follow for the best FREE dot marker printable worksheets ever! They have worksheets for every season and holiday imaginable! ❄️ ☀️ 🍎 🌲

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Baby water play mats are such a great toy to work on so many great skills at an early age! These mats work on

💧 Processing tactile information
💧 Upper body and hand strengthening
💧 Proprioceptive input
💧 Tummy time
💧 Ocular motor skills like tracking
💧 Imitation of body motions

Is your kiddo having difficulty with tummy time? This is a GREAT toy to make tummy time motivating and engaging.

Is your kiddo sensitive to messy play and tactile input? This is a great first step to desensitizing them. They can explore the water without the mess!

Level ⬆️: Have your baby practice rolling on the mat. They can notice how the water feels below them. This will increase the proprioceptive input they get while rolling and help with body awareness.

Have an older kid? Place this mat on a vertical surface, for example a wall with painters tape, and play with it that way. Working against gravity will help strengthen their upper body.

Practice tapping on the mat in various rhythms and ways and have your baby imitate you. This is a precursor to communication skills!

Practice those 👁 skills by playing I-spy with older kids and trying to locate different toys in the water.

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Trampolines are a great way to get your kiddo moving and work on so many skills!

✨Proprioceptive input
✨Jumping skills
✨Leg strength and endurance
✨Balance
✨Bilateral integration

Does your child have trouble jumping? No problem! Stand on the trampoline and you jump! The input will help begin to facilitate the jumping motion for them and your kiddo will still get sensory input. Also, practice jumping off of the trampoline and other surfaces first.

Is your kiddo tired or fatigued and having difficulty focusing? 😴 Give then a jumping break! Jumping on the trampoline for even 3-5 minutes can significantly increase your child’s arousal level and attention. This is a great idea for a movement break.

Level up and use your 🧠! Work on listening and auditory processing skills. Choose a letter or number. Have your kiddo jump until they hear that number or letter and then stop. 🛑

Don’t have a trampoline? No problem! Have your kiddo jump on a mattress or couch (with supervision of course). 🛏

🌟Pro tip: pair jumping on the trampoline with heavy work and turn it into an obstacle course. Have your kiddo jump 10 times and then lift, pull, push or carry anything (chair, pillows, laundry basket, games, squeezes in pillow, etc.). Then repeat again! This will help balance the intensive proprioceptive input to ensure regulation and help organize your child’s sensory system instead of becoming dysregulated and over active.

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Honeybee tree is an oldie but a goodie at WPOT. This game works on so many great skills like:

🐝 Bilateral coordination
🐝 Pincer grasp
🐝 Frustration tolerance and emotional regulation
🐝 Teaching cause and effect
🐝 Socialization and turn taking
🐝 Impulsivity and executive functioning skills
🐝 Gradation of force

This is such a fun game to play as a whole family or with friends. Take turns pulling the leaves one at a time and see who can get the least number of bees to fall.

Level ⬆️ those fine motor skills and use tongs to pinch and pull the leaves out one at a time!

Work on integrating your child’s Moro primitive reflex with this game! Practice having calm reactions when lots of bees fall and not having a fight or flight response.

Work on emotional regulation skills. 😡😀 When all the bees fall is that a big deal or little deal? Use humor! Silly bees, you fell out of the tree. No big deal.. let’s play again!

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!!

At WPOT we LOVE puzzles! We use them every day, all day! Puzzles target so many skills like:

🧩 Pincer grasp
🧩 Bilateral integration
🧩 Visual perceptual skills
🧩 Visual attention
🧩 Play schemes
🧩 Reflex integration

Make it active! 🏃‍♀️ Place the puzzle pieces on one side of the room and the puzzle on the other. Create your own obstacle to get the pieces and complete the puzzle.

Scatter the puzzle pieces around the room. Practice those visual discrimination and scanning skills as you complete a scavenger hunt to find the pieces. 👀

Is your kiddo scared of unexpected, loud sounds? Practice this skill with sound puzzles (vehicles, animals, etc.). Put in one puzzle piece at a time, have them take deep breathes or engage in heavy work to regulate themselves, and then try another piece. 👂

Lay on your belly and work on strengthening your head, neck and core muscles to complete the puzzle. 💪🏻
