Parent: “What did you do in OT today?” 🤔
Child: “We played!” 🤩
OT: "EXACTLY."

Play is the work of childhood - it's how we build meaningful skills! Through play, we target fine and gross motor skills, motor planning, regulation, and more.

At the BAC we like to call our approach FUN-ctional - because we believe therapy should be fun AND functional (aka helping kids & families achieve real-life meaningful goals) at the same time.

For OT Month, some of our occupational therapists are sharing their favorite activities and the "why" behind them in our newest blog post.

If you’re looking for ideas to try at home, or just want to learn more about what OT really looks like, check it out!

OT Month Spotlight 💙

Our OTs don’t just stop learning when they finish school - they are constantly attending courses, conferences, and trainings to learn new evidence-based strategies to best support the kids & families they work with every day.

We are so grateful for how dedicated our team is to growing, learning, and always trying to be better for the families we serve! ✨

BAC OT Liz Martin recently attended a continuing education event and shared a little about her experience:
"This is my second year attending the Precision CPD Sensory Summit, an online professional learning event focused on helping therapists better understand how sensory processing impacts children’s behavior, emotions, and participation in everyday activities. I always appreciate the opportunity to learn from experts in pediatric development and bring back new ideas and strategies to support the kids and families I work with. Continuing education like this helps me stay current and thoughtful in how I support each child’s unique sensory needs."

Fitness Friday: Push-Up Edition 💪

Set to soothing elevator music, please enjoy Carolyn casually doing push-ups…over and over…and over again. We're impressed too! 👏👏👏

Carolyn makes it look easy, but push-ups are truly a powerhouse exercise that build strength in the chest, shoulders, and triceps, while the core and back work hard to keep the body stable. They also challenge shoulder stability, postural control, and body awareness - all important for everyday movement.

A few quick form tips:
🔴💪 Hands under (or slightly wider than) shoulders
🟡💪 Body in one straight line from head to heels
🔵💪 Core engaged (no sagging hips!) and lower with control

Not quite ready to match Carolyn’s seemingly endless set? No problem! Push-ups can be modified with wall push-ups, knee push-ups, or incline push-ups to build strength over time.

Ask any occupational therapist about their favorite therapeutic tools, and we guarantee that THERAPY PUTTY will be on that list! So, what exactly is it and why is it the G.O.A.T. 🐐?

Therapy putty is different from your average silly putty in that it's resistive. You can purchase different degrees of firmness, ranging from extra soft to extra hard. Manipulating this putty gives hands & fingers a serious workout, contributing to the development of fine motor strength and dexterity. It also provides "heavy work" to the hands & fingers, which can help people focus or feel calmer.

OTs love therapy putty because it's SO VERSATILE! Here are some of our favorite activities:

🔴 Roll the putty into small balls or logs/snakes and then pinch them with different fingers, one at a time (thumb and index finger, thumb and middle finger, etc). Explore putty using different tools like tweezers, tongs, or scissors, too.

🟡 Push small objects (like beads, buttons, or small toys) into the therapy putty and have kids search for them by squeezing and pulling the putty apart. You can also ask children to find and sort objects by specific characteristics (color, shape, size).

🔵 Flatten the therapy putty into a thin sheet and use objects like stamps, cookie cutters, or textured items (like a comb) to create prints and patterns in the putty.

🔴 Use therapy putty to form shapes, letters, numbers, buildings, animals...anything! You can also flatten the putty and use a stick to write/draw. Children can come up with their own creations, or further challenge visual-perceptual and visual-motor skills by copying your design.

🟡 Make putty puzzles by using cookie cutters to cut shapes or letters into flattened putty. Then, invite kids to match or piece the shapes back together.

🔵 Form a small tunnel in the putty and try to "drive" a small object (like a toy car or marble) through it. How big can you make the tunnel before it falls apart? Who can fit the smallest object through the smallest hole?

OT Month Spotlight 💙

Today we're celebrating one of our amazing occupational therapists, Katie LaMarre, who recently consulted on two children’s books - The Clean-Up Monster and My Dinosaur Shoes.

These fun and relatable books follow two neurodivergent siblings - Roscoe and Ivy - as they navigate daily life. The Roscoe & Ivy series was created by a neurodivergent author (Eleni Tassopoulos Wehner) and autistic illustrator (Danamarie Hosler) from their own lived experiences.

Katie helped support these books by providing occupational therapy insight, strategies, and ensuring a neuro-affirming lens throughout both the storylines and the artwork.

You can find The Clean-Up Monster and My Dinosaur Shoes in our Amazon storefront!

Congratulations, Katie! ✨✨ We're so incredibly proud of all the work you do, both inside and outside of the clinic.

April is Autism Acceptance Month ✨

We don’t want to change your child - we want to help them grow into exactly who they are.

In our latest blog, we share how PT, OT, SLP, and feeding therapy at the Boston Ability Center helps children build skills, gain confidence, advocate for themselves, and thrive in everyday life - all while empowering parents along the way.
