Play is SO important. Did you know that play is officially recognized as one of children’s rights? Children learn an infinite number of things though play and so many of the activities you already do provide learning opportunities. Here are some helpful reminders:

Weekend activity idea!!
Print and cut out this puzzle and have your kids write in or draw their responses. Now they have a puzzle all about themselves, their favorite things, and it even helps them begin to explore their emotions (more resources on emotional regulation coming soon!).

Have fun and stay safe!

One thing we’ve heard a lot of this past week is that nearly 6 weeks of quarantine has created a teeny bit of arguing in households! It’s absolutely natural for conflict to arise when living in close quarters with little outside contact.
To help, we’ve put together one of our favorite basics of conflict resolution for you...how to make a proper apology! Apologizing properly helps make everyone feel calmer and more optimistic.
Print this poster and incorporate it into your next family discussion if tempers keep flaring.

Stay well, everyone... and let us know how else we can help!

A few days ago we posted a graphic we made giving some suggestions for activities kids can choose from if they’re feeling mad or frustrated or having a rough day.
We’ve gotten some messages noting that so many of the coping skills would work for adults too, and we’ve been asked for a parent version. So, by request, here you go! 😀

Keep messaging us if there’s something specific you’re looking for help with. You can also check out all our other free resources at:

What you’re having to do right now is not easy, parents! First, we acknowledge how difficult this is. Second, we remind you it’s tough for the kids too! Next time everyone is feeling frustrated or angry, print this out to help your kids choose something they can do to calm down and try again.

We have lots more free resources on our website and check out our “Tips from the Team” videos over at our sister page for Psychological Wellness Center.

Did you know we are running weekly support groups for all ages including one for women? Next week we’ll run our first FREE parent support hour.

Self-care.
Everyone needs it. Everyone’s suggesting it. But what does it mean?
For some it means cleaning and reorganizing, for some it means learning a new skill, for some it means crossing items off the to-do list from last year.
But could it also means doing absolutely nothing?? Yes!!!!! This is something we’ve never, ever had to deal with before. It can be overwhelming and the trauma of such sudden change can lead to feeling “frozen” and inactive.
****IT. IS. OKAY.****
We all handle things differently. Don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re doing self-care “wrong.” Don’t let anyone tell you what you SHOULD be doing to take care of yourself. The only wrong way is not listening to yourself. Self-care means honoring what you need, without feeling guilty for it.
Make sure you’re getting what you need, and then everyone around you wins because of it.

Try this: add “and that’s ok” to end of your self-care conversations
Examples:
I’m too tired to clean, I’m going to take a nap...and that’s ok.
I’m too stressed to work, I’m going to take a 30 minute Netflix break...and that’s ok.

When you really believe in the permission slip, that’s when self-care works.

How’s it going today distance learning and homeschooling parents???

It sounds like a good number of you are picking up on anxiety based on some of the questions and concerns we’ve heard today. To help, we’ve put together this visual to help you identify ways anxiety manifests in children. If you’re feeling frustrated about children being defiant or having emotional outbursts, please consider whether they might be feeling anxious about the current situation, or even specific school-related stress.

If you’re concerned, Psychological Wellness Center is running online video support groups during this time. And, as always, conducting individual video teletherapy with children and adults.

ALSO, we’ve heard you guys and we’re responding. We’re now conducting homeschool evaluations online - at 50% our regular evaluation rate.

Let us know how else we can help. We’re all in this together.

How did everyone’s day of distance learning go? One thing we’ve heard a bunch today from some moms is that it’s tough to get the kiddos motivated to start and do their work. Doing school from home is an adjustment for everyone! Kids are being asked to use their brains in different ways than they’re used to while at home. Human brains actually get very used to learning in specific environments!

We put together a few tips on Task Initiation, which is an executive functioning skill. There are lots of strategies we work with to improve executive functioning. Yesterday we provided some tips on focus. We’ll continue to address various aspects of this really important cognitive skill necessary for behavior control, emotional regulation, planning, focus, and organization.

Keep messaging us to let us know what we can help with! We’re here for you!

Many of you are struggling with Day 1 (or 5 or 10, or more....) of finding yourselves homeschoolers. We know this is challenging. And, we have lots of ways to help you out.
Here is our first “Learning From Home Series”
tip sheet for you. We’ve decided to start with focus, which is certainly no easy task when children are trying to learn with parents in an environment outside school.

Welcome!!! We’re the Center for Testing and Education at Psychological Wellness Center. Our center is run by licensed psychologists who have been leading experts in psychoeducational, diagnostic, and neuropsychogical testing for nearly a decade in Palm Beach County.

This separate page was created a few months ago as a place for Palm Beach County moms and educators to share ideas and ask questions. However, with the recent changes in our world, we’re shifting gears for a bit to help parents ride out the storm, provide tips, and answer any questions we can. Trouble with executive functioning? Processing speed? Anxiety? Motivation? Learning difficulties? School behavior?Reading comprehension? Whatever the question is, we’re here to help. Please check back for daily tips and feel free to message us about specific tips you might be looking for.

We’d love for you like this page and share with your friends as well. We’re all in this together!

Let us know how we can help.

Be well and stay safe!
