St. Patrick's Day is the time for beer, parades, shamrocks, and leprechauns. Believe it or not, these little leprechauns are a big deal for St. Patrick's, and a popular mythical figure in Irish culture.

Tales about leprechauns first emerged in 8th century Ireland. Leprechauns started off as little water-dwellers no taller than 3ft. Their lore then developed into being tiny bearded cobblers who live in burrows or hollowed-out trees. Their name is believed to come from "leath bhrogan," meaning "shoemaker." This profession is how they earn their coin for their pot of gold: they are the cobblers of the fairy world!

Although typically depicted as wearing green, leprechauns were originally thought of as wearing red. But over time, they have become the green-wearing, pipe-smoking tricksters with gold hidden at the end of a rainbow. They're so popular that there is even a National Leprechaun Museum of Ireland in Dublin, featuring a wealth of information on Irish folklore and mythology!
