Today is . A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that alters brain function and is usually caused by a sudden jolt or blow to the head. Thanks to our friends at the Brain Injury Association of America, you can learn about the symptoms of concussion from the graphic below.

Typically, concussions resolve within three to four weeks as headaches and other symptoms subside. Patients return to work, school, or the playing field, often feeling as capable as they did before their injury.

However, about 20% of cases present a more complex scenario, with concussion complications that fall beyond the scope of primary care and sports medicine physicians. In these cases specialized assessment and rehabilitation can support a normal return to activity.

Hopefully the data can be used to better quantify the current state of falls in competition. Some result in no injury at all, while some result in significant trauma. Lighting, weather, footing, and safety equipment are all variables that may or may not contribute to injury severity. If we want to do prevent harm to the best of our ability and subsequently mitigate harm when something goes wrong, we need more evidence to see the true picture.

The U.S. Equestrian Federation has announced that as of Dec. 1, 2023, all falls of horse and falls of rider in competition must be reported in the class results. Horse falls will be reported as ‘HF’ in the competition results and rider falls will be reported as ‘RF.’ This requirement will be...

Wish you could bring your doctor with you wherever you go?

Dr. Hollis offers year round telemedicine services for her patients. The doctor is truly a call away, and you'll speak to the doctor—not an answering service or office staff.

The key 🔑 to success is having an established patient-doctor relationship. Give Dr. Hollis a call and get to know your doctor before you hit the road for the spring, summer and fall circuits.
