Amanda Landry, LMHC

Amanda Landry, LMHC Amanda Landry, LMHC, CAP is owner of Caring Therapists and a Private Practice Consultant The truth is I never planned on going into private practice.

In graduate school, they barely spoke about it and when they did they told me I wouldn’t make any money. So I did what everyone told me to do and I got an agency job. Six years and a couple of promotions later, I was burnt out. It was time for a change, so I dabbled in private practice by renting space from someone on an hourly basis. From there, I opened a group practice called “Caring Therapists of Broward” and built a robust and profitable group practice by taking insurance and ensuring quality care with effective systems within the practice. Today, I'm the owner of Caring Therapists, a multi-location group practice. I'm a consultant through My Private Practice Collective, a Facebook community with over 18,000 members. I help solo and group practice owners build smart private practices. I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Addictions Professional, National Certified Counselor, and private practice consultant. My book, Guided Journal for Women with Anxiety on sale on Amazon and wherever books are sold. My training includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Counseling, Trauma-Focused CBT, DBT, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I'm a wife, mom, entrepreneur, and cat owner.

As clinicians, it’s essential to remember that requesting a rate increase is a crucial part of running a sustainable practice, even when working with insurance panels.

A good rule of thumb is to review and request a raise about once a year. When you do, frame the conversation around your value as an asset: your credentials, experience, outcomes, retention, specialty training, and the consistency you bring to their network. Insurance companies rely on high-quality providers to meet member needs.

That said, it’s also important to know the realities. Some insurance companies have fixed regional rates or temporary freezes, meaning raises may not be possible in certain areas or at certain times. A “no” doesn’t always reflect your worth; it may reflect their internal structure.

Advocating for yourself professionally, staying informed, and diversifying your income streams are all part of long-term sustainability in this field.

You deserve to be paid in a way that supports the work you do.

"In my new video, I discuss the challenges therapists face when potential clients don't book sessions after initial 15-minute consultations. Here are the top three takeaways:

Purpose of the Consultation: The main goal of the 15-minute consultation isn't just to get to know the client, but to secure an appointment with them. Clients have already reviewed the therapist's website and services, so the consultation should focus on confirming the fit and scheduling the session.

Be Confident in Closing the Deal: Therapists should be assertive in suggesting appointment times and guiding the conversation towards scheduling. It's not about being pushy, but about recognizing that both the therapist and the client want to work together for mutual benefit.

Mindset Shift: It's essential for therapists to shift their mindset and see these consultations as opportunities to help clients, not just as sales pitches. If a client hesitates, therapists can give them a short time to think and then follow up. Remember, the therapist's expertise is valuable, and they are there to assist those in need.

Keep learning and growing, and remember that every consultation is a chance to make a positive impact! 🌟" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN_pu5BKubU
