Joyce M. (Hilfiger) Garrison, age 95, of Wellsboro, PA, passed on peacefully at the Laurels Personal Care Home, Wellsboro, PA, on May 25, 2026. She was born on January 3, 1931 in Covington, PA, a daughter of the late Carlton and Gertrude (Soper) Hilfiger and was married to her beloved husband Lewis M. Garrison who passed away in 1989. She graduated from the Del Kader French School of Beauty Culture and Mansfield University with a masters degree in elementary education. Joy taught for 25 years at the Wellsboro Area School District. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wellsboro, Hospital Auxiliary, Shared Home Board, PSEA, and the Wednesday Morning Musicals. She enjoyed spending time at her Seneca Lake Cottage, collecting antiques, her gardens, cooking, cleaning her house, family gatherings and doing things for others. She is survived by son: Alan (Jenny) Garrison of Wellsboro, PA, daughter: Brenda (Don) Abplanalp of Wellsboro, PA, brother: George (Betty) Hilfiger of Covington, PA, sisters-in-law: Meda Hilfiger of Covington, PA, Anne Garrison Calkins of Mansfield, PA, beloved grandchildren: Carrie (Tim) Bradley, Jason (Whitney) Abplanalp, Alyssa (Bryce) Anderson, Marina (Zach Herzog) Garrison, four great granddaughters and two great grandsons. She was predeceased by two brothers: Lewis Hilfiger and John Hilfiger. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 11 to 12 at the First Baptist Church of Wellsboro. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 pm with Pastor Chris Osterbrock officiating. Interment will be in the Tioga County Memorial Gardens, Mansfield, PA. Linda Cady Metarko, 85, of Wellsboro, passed away at The Green Home on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.
Linda, daughter of the late Kenneth and Esther (Stiger) Cady, was born in Blossburg and grew up in Mansfield. She graduated from Mansfield High School and earned her degree as a Registered Nurse from Geisinger School of Nursing in Danville, Pennsylvania in 1961. She was a well-respected surgical charge nurse at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Wellsboro. She was recently honored with the Florence Nightingale Award for 27 years as a nurse, and remained a nurse in spirit her entire life.
Linda had a lifelong passion for sunshine, flowers, gardening, birds, cats, and a clean house. She was frequently chosen as a safe haven by any random stray cat having kittens. Linda loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren, and enjoyed family game nights. She had faith in God and loved singing hymns in the choir. She also enjoyed country music. Linda was known at the nursing home for her appetite for ice cream and bacon, as well as her sweet smile, easy disposition, and surprising humorous quips.
Linda is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years and the love of her life, Frederick, her children Lisa (David) Hutchinson of Bedford, Massachusetts and Michael (Beth) Metarko of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and four grandsons who brought such joy to her heart: Alexander and Andrew Hutchinson and Samuel and Theodore Metarko. She is also survived by her brother William (Bonnie) Cady of Sayre, Pennsylvania.
The family would like to thank the many people who cared for Linda with full hearts, offering her smiles, support, love and hair braiding through her final years, including her favorite doctor at Guthrie, caregiver Natalie Sweeney, and the excellent staffs of The Green Home and Carleton Senior Care. We would also like to thank Advocates for Alzheimer’s for the support and information they provided Fred and family during Linda’s final years, and our ever-supportive neighborhood friends who are a constant blessing.
Linda was a long-time participant in the original cohort of the Nurses’ Health Study and wished her body be donated to scientific research. Denise L (Peet) Heck, age 56, of Middlebury Center, PA, died on Friday, May 1, 2026. She was born on August 15, 1969 in Blossburg, PA a daughter of the late Paul D. Peet, Sr. and the late Ellen (Swan) Peet and was married to Edward “Ed” Heck. Denise worked for Viant Medical, Westfield, PA and CRI and enjoyed camping, being out doors, doing crafts, flower gardens and spending time with her family and friends. Mary L. Cranmer, age 87, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Sunday, April 26, 2026. She was born on November 26, 1938 in New Brunswick, NJ, a daughter of the late George and Eleanor (Grumm) Vogle and was the wife of the late Rev. Darwin “Tink” Cranmer. Mary worked for many years at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital Dietary Department and was a member of the Church of Christ, Wellsboro, PA and the Mary Wells Chapter # 452 OES. She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Paula Kress of Rochester, NY, Claire Hair of NV, Anne Cranmer of FL, several nieces, nephews and a community of friends and is best remembered for her generous and loving heart, her infectious laugh and beautiful smile. Patricia Ann Malletz, age 86, of Wellsboro, PA, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
She was born on October 29, 1939, in Rochester, NY, to James and Molly Neilon, the youngest of six children. She built a life defined by resilience, curiosity, and a deep commitment to learning. Widowed at 43, she raised her two children, Eric and Marlo Malletz, with strength, humor, and unwavering devotion.
Her career spanned the dental field and later teaching at the Vo Tech, where she shared her knowledge with students who remembered her long after they left her classroom. She was especially proud of her work in the drug and alcohol field, where she brought compassion, insight, and a belief in people’s ability to change.
She had a lifelong passion for health and wellness and was drawn to emerging ideas long before they were widely known. She was intuitive, spiritual, and endlessly curious — always reading, always learning, always exploring the next idea that captured her imagination.
She is survived by her children, Eric and Marlo; several nieces; and her beloved cat, Zippy, who was her constant companion.
Her life was shaped by love, perseverance, and a mind that never stopped reaching for more. DeWaine D. “Dewey” Starkweather, age 70, of Wellsboro, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 24, 1955 in Blossburg, PA, a son of the late Paul D. Starkweather and Leda B. (VanDergrift) Starkweather and was a 1974 Wellsboro Area High School graduate. Dewey was employed for over 50 years at A & P Cleaning and had also worked at the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce. He mowed lawns for several customers, was the paper runner for Tim Kaltenbach, Sr. Auctions, helped Kevin Webster “up on the land” and was known as “Everyone’s Friend” by so many for his helpfulness and friendliness and enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics. Dewey is survived by his mother: Leda Starkweather of Wellsboro, PA, brother: Jim (Karen) Starkweather of Middlebury Center, PA, sister: Carolyn (Frank) Julian of Harrisburg, PA, his closest nephew and nieces: Tim Kaltenbach, Sr., Emily Starkweather, Audrey Starkweather and Lynette Priset as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Powlison, Ruth (Heater Sargent) age 87 of Mansfield, PA went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 10, 2026. She was born on May 29,1938 in Tioga, PA, daughter of the late Milford and Ellen (Merrick) Heater. Of great importance to Ruth was her relationship with Jesus. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mansfield, PA. She was a very hard worker. In addition to teaching, she cared for her parents, worked on her farm, and took care of her home and children. She was a teacher at Warren L Miller Elementary School for 29 years. She taught fifth grade, reading, and her favorite, first grade, where she felt she made the biggest impact on her students. Ruth loved outdoor work, mowing her yard, gardening, and tending to any animals she could find. She was an excellent cook and baker and had a true gift of hospitality. She also loved the holidays, and gathering of family. Ruth was very generous with her resources. She loved to sew for her family and help in any way that was needed. She loved being a grandmother, especially reading books, playing games, going to the creek and going to the barn. Ruth is survived by her children Daniel (Nancy) Sargent of Mansfield, PA, Donald (Mary) Sargent of Centennial, CO, Diane (Glenn) Kerschner of Hamburg, PA, Darlene (Jeff) Nolter of Milton, PA, stepchildren Kim Averette of Gibsonville, NC, Cyndi (Tim) Payne of Mansfield, PA, and David Powlison of Mainesburg, PA. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren, 24 great- grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Ruth is also survived by her sister Janet (Randy) Tripp of Millerton, PA, sister-in-law, Nancy Heater of Roseville, PA, and brother-in-law, Merrick Heck of Ohio. She was born on June 5, 1937 in Blossburg, PA a daughter of the late George and Nina (Rice) VanZile and was married to the late Roy Dilly, Sr. Marian was a homemaker and enjoyed camping, baking, snowmobiling and going to yard sales. Irvin T. Smith, III, age 76, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Saturday, March 28, 2026. He was born on November 7, 1949 in Norristown, PA, a son of the late Irvin T. Smith, Jr. and Mildred V. (Cole) Smith and was a Vietnam Veteran serving with the US Air Force. Irvin was a manager for the PA Liquor Control Board for many years and was a member of the PA Alliance for Retired Americans, PA Association of Retired State Employees, Tioga County Democrats and the Tioga County Alliance for Democracy. Lillian M. (Speck) Iceman, age 99, of Wellsboro, PA, died on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. She was born on May 28, 1926 in Lebanon, PA a daughter of the late William and Mable L. (Strohm) Speck and was married to the late Clarence R. Iceman. Lillian was a sample maker at the Lebanon Valley Home for many years. She was an active member of the Cedar Run Baptist Church and the Brown Township Fire Company. Lillian loved the Pine Creek valley, especially the Cedar Run / Gamble Run areas where she lived later in life. Walking the local forestry roads and hiking trails were one of her favorite hobbies along with crocheting and knitting. Lillian is survived by a granddaughter: Tamara DeVogel of East Stroudsburg, PA and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
