“When a police officer is killed, it’s not an agency that loses an officer, it’s an entire nation.”
– Chris Cosgriff, ODMP Founder

We wholeheartedly agree with this powerful truth. Every officer lost in the line of duty leaves an immeasurable void in our communities, our profession, and our nation.

The ongoing exposure to stress and trauma changes who we are physiologically, psychologically, and biologically. Our brains will flag the negative and the positive becomes very hard to see. Intentional gratefulness is one way we can change this cognitive pattern. I am so grateful for my buddy, Dax. He is such a blessing to so many. F1RST clients are always so happy to see him. If I show up at a department or an event without him, “Where’s Dax” is the first question I hear. He is one of my greatest blessings. I challenge you to make it a daily practice—> identify 3 things that you are grateful and share it with your closest people. What are you grateful for today? 🐾♥️

Registration is now OPEN for our F1RST Oklahoma 3Day Peer Support and Resiliency Training.

Come meet our team and join us May 23-25 at MetroTech Springlake in OKC for this highly interactive training that will focus on effective ways to implement a peer team, how to keep your team energized, sharpen skills, and learn ways to stay on a healthy path for yourself, your family, and your Department as you navigate this line of work.

A high quality of life is possible, despite the high stress exposure; but not without awareness and intentionality. Let the experts in the fields of first responder stress, human performance, and injury mitigation help!

These trainings hold such a special place in all of our hearts as we meet new people, watch departments network, and continue to learn from each interaction so that F1RST can best serve this population. CLEET credit pending.

You do not have to be a peer member to attend. This training is focused on comprehensive wellness and resiliency in the first responder.

Visit our website to register at www.F1RST.org or call 405-696-4567.

Can't wait to see you there!

“Doctor Twedell and the group at F1RST are an amazing resource for the Allen Fire Department. They have provided outstanding education, treatment, and care for the members of our organization. We are very selective when it comes to providing a referral for our personnel. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. T and the F1RST team. Thank you for all you do for us, our family, and the Public Safety community.”

So honored this past week to be asked to provide Resilience Training for this awesome group of SWAT operators.

Research has taught us that:
-over 40% of SWAT members are left to train and condition on their own.
-55% of SWAT members score lower on core strength than the average person.
-SWAT members have more than 3x the cortisol (a stress hormone which can lead to chronic inflammation) than the average person.
Welcome to high stress/injury city.

These elite athletes deserve more.

F1RST now offers a team focused 4 hour comprehensive Diagnostic and Training experience at the STAR in Frisco. Experts include physical and manual therapists, performance specialists, first responder therapists, and a registered dietician. State of the art equipment and technology will be utilized for individual reports to foster insights on performance and training needs, and can de-identified and shared with team leaders so that pivots can be made where needed for injury mitigation and to optimize outcomes.

THORNE supplementation for all to fuel the process.

Stress inoculation training will also occur in our cognition lab and cold plunge with guidance on nervous system regulation to master one's physiology. A key tool for both on and off duty.
Don't let the job train you, train up for the demands of the job.
Reach out today and we'll get you on the books! DM me, email info@f1rst.org or call 405-696-4567. This experience is also great for other units, team building, department wide training and leadership. And... all of this is NOW available in Oklahoma.

My Practice

Making the choice to seek therapy, whether for you or your child, requires an enormous amount of courage. It shows a desire for change. Dena is devoted to inspiring hope and growth so her clients may become mindful and make choices toward a more successful life.

Dena is a Licensed Professional Counselor, providing individual and family therapy to all ages in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. Her specialties as a counselor include: public servants/veterans, athletes, trauma in all ages of people, grief, men’s issues, behavioral changes/challenges, parenting, conflict resolution, forgiveness, anxiety, and defining purpose.

Dena retired from a twenty-three year career in law enforcement, spending the last ten years in the crimes against children unit. She understands the rewards, demands, and stress of being a public servant. She has chosen to help others in the same capacity. Through her experiences with her daughter, she has gained an understanding that the children of public servants and veterans may be affected by their parents’ chosen profession. Often these children may develop issues or concerns resulting in needing therapy in a safe place from someone that their parents trust.
