Every fall our family makes this cold/flu season remedy, adapted from one of the recipes by the incredible herbalist – Rosemary Gladstar. I had the pleasure of being present for one of her herbal talks while my wife was a student of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University several years ago and ...

🍂 Every fall we brew up a batch of 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿—a traditional, immune-boosting tonic to help fend off the fall and winter crud. It’s a powerful ally for staying healthy, and surprisingly versatile (in addition to keeping us healthy as a remedy, we love it as a zesty salad dressing!).

Your hormones are like an internal symphony—when they’re in balance, everything flows. You have steady energy, a clear mind, stable moods, restful sleep, and a sense of vitality. But in perimenopause and menopause, the “conductor” changes, and the music can feel out of sync.

Fluctuating estrogen and progesterone can impact not just reproductive health but also your bones, heart, brain, skin, and digestion. Hot flashes, brain fog, sleep struggles, weight changes, anxiety, and fatigue are all signs that your body is adjusting to a new hormonal rhythm.

The good news? This isn’t the end of your vitality—it’s an awakening. With the right nutrition, herbal support, and lifestyle strategies, you can restore harmony to your hormone health and feel empowered in this new chapter.

Our Naturopathic Hormone Therapy (NHT) program uses root-cause assessment, botanical medicine, adrenal and thyroid optimization, and mind-body medicine to bring your hormonal “music” back into tune—naturally.

Your body is speaking—are you listening?

At Blue Earth Medicine, many women approaching menopause ask us, “I should get my hormones tested,” and you might be surprised to learn that testing often doesn’t provide the clarity you expect. Here’s why:

Hormones Fluctuate Daily: During perimenopause—the years leading up to menopause—estrogen and progesterone levels can swing dramatically from day to day (and even hour to hour). A single blood or saliva test is just a snapshot in time, which may not reflect your overall hormonal picture.

Symptoms Tell the Real Story: Hot flashes, night sweats, irregular cycles, mood changes, and sleep disturbances often appear well before any lab values fall outside the “normal” range. In fact, many women with significant symptoms still show “normal” hormone levels on tests.

Testing Rarely Changes the Approach: Since menopause is a natural transition—not a disease—the focus is on supporting your body through the changes, not “fixing” numbers on a lab report. Whether your estrogen is low-normal or borderline low, your care plan will center on the same goals: balancing symptoms, supporting bone and heart health, optimizing adrenal and thyroid function, and improving quality of life.

Exceptions Do Exist: Hormone testing can be useful if your symptoms are unusual, severe, or suggest another condition (such as thyroid disease or early menopause before age 40). But for most women in midlife, symptoms and cycle history are the best guides for care.

Bottom line: Menopause care works best when it’s guided by your experience—not just your lab results. That’s why at Blue Earth Medicine, we take a holistic, root-cause approach, listening to your symptoms and tailoring a plan that supports your body naturally.
