These are my favorite take aways and are also pieces of advice that I give my clients!

Treat your physical therapist like your dentist!
Yearly checkups to assess how you feel and get advice.

Practice high intensity activities in moderation!
Many days in a row of the same activity doesn't give your body enough recovery time or variety of movement, which can lead to injury.

When Starting something new or increasing intensity, build gradually each week.

Use your non-dominant hand for certain tasks! Start with your phone and your mouse.
Your dominant hand performs millions of movements per week and is therefore at a greater risk for injury from the shear repetition and forces required in everyday tasks.

Don't rely on stretching to fix muscle tightness!
This is an important takeaway!
Many people feel like they need to stretch more to avoid injury. Often times the answer is actually strengthening the muscle that tends to feel tight!

May is โ€œWorld Posture Monthโ€.
It is a good month to increase awareness about posture, ergonomics, physical therapy and overall wellness!

Poor posture can lead to:
Neck pain
Back pain
Headaches
Jaw pain
GI issues
Impaired mood
Impaired sleep
Decreased productivity
And many other issuesโ€ฆ

Unfortunately it is not as easy as trying to sit up or stand up straight. It is much more complicated. Tight hamstrings, tight hip
Flexors, tight pectoralis minor, weak abdominals, week deep neck flexors, weak posterior chain, impaired movement patternsโ€ฆ

You may have great posture when you are up and about - what happens when you sit at your desk?

Which muscles are tight?
Which muscles are weak?
What changes do you need to make to your work station?

It is not about how it looksโ€ฆ it is about preventing current & future problems that impact your ability to work & take part in recreational activities.

Trying to to stand up straight is a good start but that does not address the underlying structural limitations. The specific areas of weakness and/or tightness make it difficult to maintain over time.

Posture and health are directly related.

We are all are battling the influence of long hours at the computer, laptops & phones on our posture.

We all need tools in our toolbox to work on the pieces of this puzzle to help the whole picture change.

Look around your office, a coffee shop, a crowded streetโ€ฆ SO many people put their necks in this position while using their phones.
It is likely that you do too!
Repeatedly putting your neck in this position for prolonged periods of time will lead to discomfort, pain and injury.
Lift your phone up with your hands to bring it closer to you rather than bringing your face closer to your phone. It will help keep you out of the PT office, chiropractor appointments and the surgical suite.

What do all of the people in these professions have in common?
They are all at risk for musculoskeletal disorders due to the ergonomic risk factors that include repetition, awkward postures, force & contact stress. Simple changes would decrease discomfort, reduce the risk of injury significantly, and improve their productivity. In the past few months I have worked with office employees, surgeons, construction workers, a hairdresser and employees that work from home to help improve their ergonomics & they have all recognized immediate benefits. What exactly is the Rotator Cuff???
This is an awesome visual! Rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common injuries of the shoulder that I see in my office. Tendinitis, impingement, partial tears, full tearsโ€ฆ The shoulder is incredibly complex & the rotator cuff is a critical component!
Donโ€™t rely on googling exercises because it is likely that more specific intervention will help you get better faster and it is not worth risking additional injury to this important structure!

Hardwood & tile are not compatible with prolonged barefoot standing and walking for most people!
Indoor pair and an outdoor pair of you are concerned about germs!
