Nurture and Nourish-New Baby and Feeding Support Group.

Daily, Monday through Thursday, from 10:30 until noon right here at in Beverly.

This is a wonderful way to connect with other parents and get the support you need from seasoned postpartum practitioners. Whether it's your first kid or your last, we all need a village!

Yesterday, today and everyday. I am grateful for families, colleagues and patients for trusting me, supporting me and loving me. 🥰

If anyone would like to know the key to my heart, by the way, this picture sums it up. The greatest thing about being an adult is that you get to have your own traditions. So Korean food for Thanksgiving it was. Dan threw it down in the kitchen and we got to spend 2 hours devouring 김치찌개 (kimchi stew), 떡국 (rice cake soup with brisket), 파전 (veggie pancake thingy. I'm bad at translating Korean food into English!), 삼겹살 (grilled pork belly), 잡채 (glass noodles with veggies and more brisket), various side dishes and 참이슬 (soju). 🥰

The past few weeks have been such fun at Baby Cafe. I've gotten to spend a few minutes here and there helping out, but I'm always bummed to have to miss the majority of it. No more! Im blocking off my schedule and will be available from 10:30 until 11:30 tomorrow for more complex questions if they arise. Whether you are brestfeeding, pumping, combo feeding or weaning, you're welcome to come on by!

Welcome to The Boston Area Lactation Connection.
Since moving my office up to Beverly in the space, I thought I should re-introduce myself!

I'm Kira Kim, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Clinical Herbalist specializing in reproductive endocrinology and mama to 4 amazing kids (and one geriatric, diabetic feline).

After a teary conversation this morning with a new parent who felt bullied by her pediatricians office lactation consultant when she wanted to combo feed, I wanted to speak on my practice motto.

"Feed the baby, save your sanity," came about organically as it is something I have repeated to new parents so often over the years. Whatever the overarching goal is, this is what I keep in the forefront of my mind as a practitioner.

As an IBCLC, my goal is to serve ALL families through this lens. I have plenty of families that are exclusively breastfeeding, but I regularly do weaning consults, functional assessments and bottling care plans for fully formula feeding families and combo feeding education.

Being non-judgemental is not just a tag-line, it's a way of life here at The Boston Area Lactation Connection.

This years theme for World Breastfeeding Week is "Closing the Gap." This theme is very close to my heart. Over the years I have volunteered at Vital Village and La Leche League, given free consults to low income families, taught prenatal classes to teen moms and have given clinical presentations and talks to med students and residents on everything from The History of Breastfeeding from an African American Perspective to Breastfeeding Equity in Pediatric Practice. Closing the gap and increasing access to clinical lactation care is something I am always working on and something I am deeply passionate about.

Last year, I started a non-profit aimed at serving Masshealth patients. These families can not typically afford clinical lactation care, and Masshealth is one of the only insurance providers that REFUSES to reimburse. So they are often left getting 10 minute advice from their ped, who doesn't have time to take a full history and often just recommends supplementing with no follow up.

If you've been under my care, you know the value of having a clinician at your finger tips, on the patient portal, there to answer any questions you might have. Being back has been so wonderful! Seeing parents anxiety just melt down their shoulders and having babies smile at me never, ever gets old. The new office is a blast and is everything that it was envisioned to be. I'm eternally grateful for Erin for putting this space together for the community, but also in her amazingly intentional choices to bring together specific practitioners who so deeply want the people they see to feel empowered and seen. I'll be in the office Tue, Thurs and Saturday this upcoming week. See ya soon!!

I don't often recommend books because I spend most of my time reading research and dry existentialism. This is an exception. The above is from the epilogue, written by the author's wife. Truer words haven't met my eyes in years, and I felt every word of this statement.

What an honor it is to be alive, though all of the daily minutiae, trials and tribulations try us, and the big things threaten to break us. What a phenomenal read. Grab a box of tissues.

Sabbatical has been goooood ya'll. Days have been filled with a lot of piano playing, introspection, deep conversations and rest. Since the 4 kiddos have been off from school, it's shifted a bit and now days are filled with beach walks, random ice cream shop trips and all the checklist making as I gear up to get back to work. New office is in the space at 131 Dodge St in Beverly. I couldn't be more excited to be in this space and to see all of these wonderful practitioners every day. Can't wait to see you soon.

The Boston Area Lactation Connection will not be accepting new patients for the rest of Spring into at least early Summer 2024. Our new office will be in Beverly when we get back! They say you can't pour from an empty cup, so off I go for some much needed rest to recharge!
