🧑‍🚒👩‍⚕️Due to staffing constraints, any child dressed as a firefighter or EMT/Paramedic today will be required to pick up a shift with EMS or at one of our local fire departments. Thank you.

All jokes aside, please have a safe and happy Halloween! Make sure to carry a flashlight if you plan to trick-or-treat and be aware of children throughout your neighborhood as the sun sets this evening. 🎃👻

This week is National Fire Prevention Week, a time when you are encouraged to take steps to prevent fires, not only inside your home or business but wildfires as well.

As the weather cools, many will turn to alternative heat sources, which, if used improperly, could start a fire in your home. Unattended cooking is one of the leading causes of house fires, and a single spark coupled with dry weather, falling leaves, and dry vegetation can quickly ignite a wildfire.

Please take steps to protect yourself, your home, and others by using heat sources appropriately and maintaining at least 3 feet of distance between any heat source and other objects. Never start a campfire and leave it unattended, or burn in a dry, wooded area. Lastly, always keep an eye on your food as you are cooking, set timers, and if something does ignite on the stove, place the lid on the pot to smother the flames.

All week, we will post additional tips to protect you and your family. Please do your part to keep everyone safe and prevent fires from starting and growing out of control.

Always Prepared! We are grateful that our area, and our neighbors along the coast are no longer going to have major impacts from Imelda. Last week, the forecast did not seem so assuring. What that also means is this room, our Emergency Operations Center, can remain quiet for a few more days.

As we round out Emergency Preparedness Month, we want to assure our citizens that we prepare just as we encourage you to do. For us, that means tracking conditions or events that require enhanced monitoring and collaboration between various county departments. That’s where the EOC comes into play. Teams from departments throughout the county come together when the Director activates this facility. We can meet, collaborate, monitor conditions and have advanced planning in place to ensure emergency response goes uninterrupted.

Remember that it is always best to be prepared rather than reactive to whatever could come up. Let’s all work together to be a better prepared community, regardless of what or why!

Are you ready in the event of an emergency? Are you sure?

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month and over the coming weeks will help make sure you are ready for any emergency to come your way. Being prepared starts with making sure you have an emergency supply kit ready in case you need to quickly leave or if the power goes out, everything is in one, easily accessible location.

For a full list of items you should have in your kit, you can visit:
▪ NC Emergency Management: https://www.readync.gov/plan-and-prepare/get-kit
▪ FEMA: https://www.ready.gov/kit

You'll never need it, until you do. Being prepared is key to ensuring you can calmly react to any emergency.

Rockingham County Emergency Services has received a $25,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to help enhance the County’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.

The funding is part of Duke Energy’s Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) grant program, which awarded $25,000 grants to 20 government agencies and nonprofit organizations across North Carolina.

How the funds will be used:
• The purchase of new gear bags for the Rockingham County Swift Water Rescue Team, which is certified for state deployment after local needs are met.
• Renovation of the Rockingham County Emergency Services Command Trailer, a vital asset used in various emergency situations, including severe weather events, law enforcement incidents, and missing persons searches.

This is the second grant that Rockingham County has received from the Duke Energy Foundation in recent years. A previous award of $50,000 was used to upgrade the County’s Emergency Operations Center, enhancing coordination during disaster response.

🚑Do you know the signs of a stroke? Strokes impact millions of Americans each year, including patients and their families and someone in North Carolina every 20 minutes.

When someone is experiencing signs of a stroke, it is very important to call 911 right away, where telecommunicators will immediately dispatch EMS crews as they conduct a stroke assessment with the caller.

🏥Our telecommunicators and EMS personnel work diligently to ensure that we collect the necessary information to better assist you once crews arrive. They also closely collaborate with our hospitals to immediately transport you to CT as soon as possible, as timing is critical when identifying and treating a stroke.
