🧠Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Older Adults with Neck Pain?
A new large-scale study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) explored the safety of chiropractic care for older adults experiencing new episodes of neck pain. Using 2019 Medicare data from nearly 292,000 patients, researchers compared outcomes across three groups: those receiving chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT), those receiving primary medical care with analgesic prescriptions, and those seen in primary care without medication.
The findings were clear — patients who received chiropractic care experienced significantly fewer adverse events than those managed through standard medical approaches. Compared to those who received primary care with analgesic prescriptions, the chiropractic group showed a 20% lower risk of adverse outcomes. When compared to primary care without medications, risk was still 14% lower among those treated by chiropractors.
These results reinforce the safety of chiropractic care for older adults with neck pain and support its role as a conservative, non-pharmacologic treatment option that may help reduce reliance on medications while maintaining positive patient outcomes.
