Panic is a sudden burst of intense anxiety that peaks within a few minutes and often subsides after 10-20 minutes.

Typically panic triggered by a catastrophic interpretation of symptoms associated with anxiety. For example, you feel your heart beating and start to believe that you could be having a heart attack.

Fear is an emotion that tends to be oriented in the present. For example, you might see a shadow that resembles the shape of a person in your home, but upon closer inspection, it’s just the silhouette of a coat, so the fear subsides and you move on with your evening.

Anxiety is usually based on an unrealistic threat that’s oriented in the hypothetical or future tense. Because there’s no ability for the fear to subside, the fear builds and can become cyclical.

Picture this: two people are riding on a ski lift. Both of them are experiencing an increased heart rate and sweaty palms, but only one is experiencing anxiety - the other person is feeling excited.

Both people are reacting to a ‘fight or flight’ response that naturally occurs in the amygdala, but only one is interpreting it as something to fear.

When it comes to finding methods to treat your anxiety, a place to start is by re-approaching the way you think about situations that would typically make you anxious.

Depending on the individual, there are many different options to choose from.

Anxiety is an emotion that’s related to fear. It is typically future-oriented, prolonged, and essentially irrational in nature. Because of this element of irrationality, it can be difficult to logically understand.

A type of anxiety most people experience is the feeling one gets before speaking before a large group of people. However, for those living with an anxiety disorder, that feeling persists for days, weeks, months, or years.

If you’re someone who has experienced anxiety first-hand, share how you would explain the feeling in the comments below.
