Sunlight contains different types of ultraviolet radiation — and they don’t behave the same way inside your skin.

☀️ UVB primarily affects the outer layer — the epidermis.
This is the radiation responsible for sunburn.
It directly damages the DNA inside keratinocytes, triggering inflammation and redness.

In response, your melanocytes (pigment-producing cells located in the basal layer) increase melanin production. That’s why you tan.
A tan is not “healthy glow” — it’s your skin activating a defense mechanism.

But here’s where it gets more serious.

🌞 UVA penetrates much deeper — into the dermis.
This is where your collagen and elastin live.
These fibers are responsible for firmness, elasticity, and structural integrity.

UVA generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which fragment collagen fibers and degrade elastin.

Over time, this leads to:
• loss of skin density
• fine lines
• sagging
• uneven texture
• long-term photoaging

And unlike UVB, UVA doesn’t necessarily cause visible burning.
You may not see immediate damage — but structural breakdown is happening silently.
