TLDR ✨️🌻♾️

I’m usually very intentional about the media I take in, but RFK Jr.'s recent speech brought up a flood of emotion I’m still processing.

As a mother to an autistic child with high support needs YES its fu**in hard… because we live in a world that does little to support them and their families. However THEY are whole, worthy, and deeply unique human beings. To hear them spoken about in terms of their “value” based on how they fit into a capitalist framework felt gutting. It was angering. It was heartbreaking. And it reinforced just how far we still have to go.

He had a platform—a real opportunity to advocate for increased funding, access to therapies, inclusive education, and equitable services that families like mine struggle to find. But instead, it felt like a reduction, a flattening of the full spectrum of what it means to be autistic.

What’s also been hard to witness is the divide in the autism community that surfaced in response. The growing tension between those who identify as high-functioning and those with higher support needs is becoming more pronounced. It’s as if there’s no room to hold all of our truths at once, no grace for the complexity of each person’s experience.

And yet, we need each other. We need a shared understanding that advocacy must include everyone—not just the voices that are easiest to hear or most socially acceptable. We need compassion. We need nuance. And we need to remember that being seen and supported shouldn't be a privilege, it should be a given.

This reflection isn’t about politics for me. It’s about humanity. It’s about my child. And it’s about a community that deserves so much more than being weighed by standards they were never meant to meet.
