Happy National Social Workers Month! 🖤
—
At Iama Center, social workers are at the heart of what we do: spreading awareness, breaking stigma, and supporting Black mental health every day.

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible people on our team and the work they do to make mental wellness accessible, culturally informed, and community-centered.

Healing does not happen in isolation.
—
Collective healing reminds us that emotional restoration is often rooted in community.

For many Black communities, healing has always included connection, advocacy, and mutual support alongside individual care. Therapy matters, and so does community care.

Black History Month may be ending, but our commitment to Black mental health is not.
—
Black mental health is shaped by history, strengthened by community, and sustained by love.

Spreading awareness, reducing stigma, increasing representation, and expanding access to culturally responsive care must continue beyond February.

At Iama Center, we remain committed to centering Black mental wellness in conversation, care, and community.

—
This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby Jr., a pioneering psychiatrist and founder of Rational Behavior Therapy.

His work empowered individuals to actively participate in their healing and helped expand the field of cognitive therapy.

Remember: Black contributions have always shaped mental health care.

Mental health disparities don’t always show up in the ways people expect.
—
In many communities of color, depressive symptoms may go unrecognized, undertreated, or unsupported for longer periods of time, often due to stigma, access barriers, cultural mistrust, or systemic inequities in care.

Persistence is not a personality trait. It can be a sign that support hasn’t been accessible, culturally responsive, or safe.

Early intervention and equitable mental health care matter.

Some pioneers helped shape modern psychiatry, even if their names aren’t widely known.
—
This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, one of the first Black psychiatrists and an early researcher of Alzheimer’s disease.

His work studying brain changes in Alzheimer’s patients helped advance the foundation of neuroscience.

His legacy reminds us that Black contributions have always been part of mental health history.

Emotional safety is foundational to mental wellness.
—
It’s the ability to express yourself, set boundaries, and be vulnerable without fear of judgment or harm.

When safety is present, trust grows. When it’s absent, stress increases and connection can suffer.

Healthy relationships should feel safe and not overwhelming.

🔖 Save this as a reminder that safety is part of love.

Some pioneers change the field by asking better questions.
—
This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser, one of the first Black women to earn a Ph.D. in psychology.

Her research focused on how school environments impacted the academic and emotional well-being of Black children.

She challenged the field to consider how belonging, opportunity, and systemic inequities shape outcomes.

Representation in mental health is necessary.
—
Only 5% of the U.S. psychology workforce is Black or African American.

That gap affects trust, access, and how safe someone feels seeking support. When providers reflect the communities they serve, stigma decreases and culturally responsive care becomes more attainable.

Advancing Black mental health equity means expanding opportunity, mentorship, and representation across the field.

Psychological testing hasn’t always been unbiased
—
The work of Dr. Herman George Canady helped us see that.

This Black History Month, we honor a psychologist who challenged inequities in intelligence testing and highlighted how race and social context influence assessment outcomes.

His work continues to shape conversations around fair, culturally responsive mental health care.

Healthy love is not limited to romantic relationships. It includes friendships, chosen family, community, boundaries, healing, and the relationship you have with yourself.

Today, we invite you to practice intentional love: toward others, and toward yourself.
