This morning, I found myself contemplating our precious environment, which serves as our sole life support system. Instead of instilling in children the principles of cannibalistic capitalism, perhaps it would be more beneficial to educate them about the wonders of our living world, emphasizing the importance of caring for it and all its inhabitants. Such knowledge should be integrated alongside other essential subjects in education. In the grand scheme of things, the incessant noise of social media, the pursuit of education, and the mechanisms of capitalism will all be rendered insignificant if we find ourselves embroiled in a civil war on a planet that has been stripped of its resources. While it's true that the Earth has shown resilience in the past, what many fail to grasp is the alarming rate at which the human population is growing and depleting our finite resources. It may be prudent to reevaluate the values that dominate our contemporary society and reconsider what we prioritize and what we neglect.

In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt considered inviting Booker T. Washington to the White House for dinner. It would be the first time in American history that a black man had ever dined as a sitting president’s guest.

But Roosevelt hesitated. He was scared. Scared of what his Southern relatives might think. Scared of what the newspapers would say. Scared that racist voters would abandon him, that he would lose support in the South, that it could cost him the election. But in the end, it was precisely because he was scared that he did it.

“The very fact that I felt a moment’s qualm on inviting him because of his color made me ashamed of myself,” Roosevelt said in a letter, “and made me hasten to send the invitation. As things turned out, I am very glad that I asked him, for the clamor aroused by the act makes me feel as if the act was necessary.”

It’s not a perfect rule but it’s a pretty good one: Do the thing you are scared to do. Because where we experience resistance, hesitation, reluctance is often evidence of progress or the potential for it. That tinge of self-preservation is the pinging of the metal dictator going off. We may have found something.

Challenge yourself. Do something that scares you. Do the thing you’ve been hesitating about. They say not to take counsel of your fears, but that’s exactly what you are going to do today: listen closely and then do the opposite.

How does a Stoic respond to cruelty?

Marcus Aurelius wrote to himself that “the best way to avenge yourself is to not be like that.” Seneca put it this way, “How much better to heal than seek revenge from injury. Vengeance wastes a lot of time and exposes you to many more injuries than the first that sparked it.”

As Marcus and Seneca both wrote, the proper response— indeed the best revenge— is to exact no revenge at all. If someone treats you rudely and you respond with rudeness, you have not done anything but prove to them that they were justified in their actions. If you meet other people’s dishonesty with dishonesty of your own, guess what? You’re proving them right— now everyone is a liar.

Keep in mind that most cruelty is a mask for deep-seated weakness. Kindness in these situations is only possible for people of great strength. You have that strength. Use it.
