6 foods to prepare your body for labor 🤍

In the final weeks of pregnancy, nourishment isn’t about forcing labor — it’s about supporting your body’s strength, endurance, and natural readiness for birth.

🥑 Avocados – Rich in magnesium and healthy fats to support muscle function and stamina

🥣 Pumpkin seeds – High in magnesium, zinc, and iron to support uterine muscle function and energy levels

🍠 Sweet potatoes – Provide complex carbohydrates and potassium for sustained energy and muscle contractions

🥚 Eggs – A complete protein with choline to support muscle strength and endurance

🌿 Red raspberry leaf tea – Traditionally used to support uterine tone and efficiency (typically recommended in the third trimester—check with your provider)

🌴 Dates – Research suggests consuming dates in late pregnancy may support cervical ripening and reduce the need for interventions

Labor is physical work. Fueling your body intentionally helps you feel stronger, supported, and more prepared for birth.

✨ Our doulas support families with evidence-based birth prep, nutrition guidance, and postpartum care so you don’t have to navigate this season alone.

Heres the thing ➡️ Clutter doesn’t just live in your home - it lives in your nervous system.

Visual chaos adds to mental load, increases stress hormones, and can quietly contribute to anxiety during a time when your body and brain are already in a huge transition.

Messes are inevitable postpartum.
There are bottles everywhere, laundry piles up, meals are half-finished, and time feels… different.

But here’s what we’ve seen time and time again as postpartum doulas 👇

Families who truly enjoy their postpartum season- who recover more smoothly, feel less overwhelmed, and are able to fully bond - are not doing more. They’re supported better.

A tidy space isn’t about having a picture-perfect house. It’s about creating an environment that supports rest, healing, and regulation.

And here’s the key part 👇
You don’t need to do it yourself.

Having help - whether that’s postpartum doulas, household support, or someone handling the day-to-day tasks — allows you to focus on what actually matters:
• recovering
• bonding with your baby
• resting your nervous system

Postpartum isn’t meant to be survived through chaos. It’s meant to be held in care by people AND by the space around you 🤍

You don’t need less mess you need more support. At Michigan Family Doula‘s our postpartum Doula‘s are trained to support you and help you handle all of the mundane daily tasks so that you can focus on what truly matters- resting, healing and bonding with your baby.

Babies don’t smile most at the loudest voice or the most playful adult. They smile most when their nervous system feels regulated. A newborn’s smile isn’t a reward.
It’s communication 🤍

In the first few weeks, babies may smile reflexively—often during sleep—as their facial muscles and nervous system mature. But around 6–8 weeks, something shifts. Their brain begins to recognize familiar vs. unfamiliar faces, and smiles become social.

This recognition happens before conscious thought or language develops and is rooted in early emotional processing systems in the brain. When a baby smiles, their brain is offering feedback—not praise—saying:

“I feel safe here.”
“This person helps my body settle.”

Smiles are one of the earliest signs of co-regulation—a baby’s way of telling us that connection, familiarity, and calm presence matter more than stimulation.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can offer a baby isn’t more energy…
It’s steadiness. 🤍
