CONTRARY TO POPULAR belief, George Washington did not have wooden teeth. It is certainly true that he suffered from numerous dental health problems, though. Probably as a result of genetics and the poorly balanced diet of the era, he began losing his teeth in his twenties and only had one left by the time he was inaugurated president. 😧

None of Washington’s dentures contained wood. They were made of materials like hippo ivory, brass, gold, and possibly human teeth. A likely origin of the wooden teeth myth is that these dentures had a tendency to become badly stained, so they might have looked more and more like wood over time. They also caused Washington a lot of discomfort and, to his distress, altered the shape of his face.

As dental professionals, we want to highlight Washington’s dentist, Dr. Greenwood, who firmly believed that a dentist should “never extract a tooth…[when] there is a possibility of saving it.” 👍 This belief is why he made room for Washington’s remaining tooth when crafting an advanced set of dentures for him. Most other dentists of the day would have just pulled the tooth to get it out of the way.
