Three “Normal” Symptoms That Deserve a Second Look

The top three symptoms I see most often in perimenopausal and menopausal women — and the ones most often brushed off as “just getting older” — are:

✨ Joint pain
✨ Fatigue
✨ Insomnia

Just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal.
These symptoms are your body’s way of asking for help and balance.

💪 Joint pain is often driven by inflammation and changing estrogen levels.
⚡️ Fatigue can mean your adrenal glands need a reset.
🌙 Insomnia often points to hormonal or blood sugar imbalances.

Diagnosing disease is important- it has saved my life! But healthcare falls short if it is all we do. While this is important at any age, perimenopause is a great time to focus on health optimization. We’re moving into the second half of our lives, and lets get real here, it’s when our bodies have more wear and tear, and tend to have more problems. There is a lot of talk about microplastics these days, and it is pretty frightening. We don’t know the extent of the health impacts, but what we do know is not good. For starters, they are endocrine disruptors, and for those of us going through hormonal transitions such as perimenopause, it can make things worse. It’s scary.
Right now my feed is full of companies capitalizing on that fear. I can buy something like “non toxic activewear,” and because I have taken some action my anxiety will be temporarily lessened. Capitalism at its finest! The truth is that the only way we are going to stop microplastics from building up in our body is by changing the system that makes single use plastics the easiest and cheapest way to manufacture things. It is not a one click solution.
All that being said, there are a few things that you can do to minimize your exposure. These are things I recommend to all my patients.

🏋️‍♀️ Top Mistakes Women Over 40 Make When Starting an Exercise Program

❌ Waiting until you have more time – You will always be busy. Start with two minutes per day. Creating the routine is the key.

❌ Thinking there’s a “perfect” exercise plan – we all know perfection is the enemy of the good. A few minutes of half assed exercise done consistently will change your life. Seriously.

❌ Assuming exercise needs to be a chore – Find something you enjoy like hiking, dancing, walking or lifting weights. If all of this pales in comparison to sitting on the couch, see if you can make it fun by adding audiobooks, good music, a friend etc..
