The city of Philadelphia issued an apology Thursday for the unethical medical experiments performed on mostly Black inmates at its Holmesburg Prison from the 1950s through the 1970s concurrent to the Tuskegee Experiment.
Once again the Black community has found themselves victim to antebellum ideologies derived from slavery demonstrated in poor medical ethics.
How could a medical doctor as a human being inflict such egregious acts on another human being?
This answer is long winded but I’ll keep it short; it’s the dehumanization of Black bodies. The countless times the Black communities have been dismissed, rejected and rescinded care on mutiple occasions during routine and emergency care.
This system needs to be corrected and corrected now! An apology to these victims is simply not enough.
We need the courage of the healthcare system to look deeply into this problem and work with organizations such as OurHealth to solve them.
