The city of Philadelphia issued an apology Thursday for the unethical medical experiments performed on mostly Black inmates at its Holmesburg Prison from the 1950s through the 1970s concurrent to the Tuskegee Experiment.

Once again the Black community has found themselves victim to antebellum ideologies derived from slavery demonstrated in poor medical ethics.

How could a medical doctor as a human being inflict such egregious acts on another human being?

This answer is long winded but I’ll keep it short; it’s the dehumanization of Black bodies. The countless times the Black communities have been dismissed, rejected and rescinded care on mutiple occasions during routine and emergency care.

This system needs to be corrected and corrected now! An apology to these victims is simply not enough.

We need the courage of the healthcare system to look deeply into this problem and work with organizations such as OurHealth to solve them.

It’s Movember, the month when people around the world shine a light on men’s health—both physical and mental. The statistics are startling:

✅But there is good news here, too: many men’s health issues are preventable or curable when caught early.

✅At OurHealth, we partnered with Bird’s Eye to implement breakthrough technology for observing trending health complaints of the Black community to identify inefficiencies in the our communities receiving care and to help shift the statistics.

✅Another is to join in on raising awareness.

Visit the Movember website to learn more about men’s health—and look for our quiz that just may surprise you.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 to recognize Hispanic/Latino contributions to American history and culture. The Hispanic/Latino community is the largest ethnic minority group in the US, and is incredibly diverse, with people tracing their heritage to Spanish-speaking countries in South and Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Spain. Hispanic Heritage Month encourages us to ensure that Hispanic/Latino perspectives are honored and welcomed in healthcare. The Hispanic/Latino community is impacted by health disparities compared to non-Hispanic whites, including:

✅22% less likely to have controlled high blood pressure.

✅28% lower colorectal screening rate.

✅66% higher rate of diagnosed diabetes
Higher rates of obesity in adults as well as children and adolescents.

OurHealth aims to address Hispanic/Latino health disparities at its source by connecting providers with cultural competency training as part of a robust health equity plan.

In light of these studies, some scholars have concluded that racial disparities in health can be explained by looking to the individuals who are choosing not to prescribe the most effective, health- and life-conserving treatments to racial minorities. The argument is that if people of color are sicker and are dying at younger ages than white people, this may be because physicians have racial biases. Their biases cause them to give their patients of color inferior health care and, in so doing, contribute to higher rates of morbidity and mortality.

While this seem ominous, there is hope! Now more than ever many organizations such as OurHealth are creating solutions that aims to increase awareness about racial disparities and resolve medical disparities.

It is imperative that doctors and hospitals work with these organizations to make the healthcare system a better one.

Many of us are aware of the Supreme Court ruling which reversed Roe v. Wade, ending a constitutional right to abortion (under certain conditions) and returning the determination of rights to the states.

We understand and appreciate that on this issue there are ethical and philosophical positions that can be opposing, irreconcilable and sincerely held. However, one consequence of this ruling is that access to safe and appropriate health care is now at potentially greater risk for many women, especially Black and trans communities who currently have a disproportionate rate as to which they access healthcare.
As a company whose mission is dedicated to improving health outcomes, this concerns us greatly.

We are assessing the impact on how we can pivot our business solutions to support our communities as their healthcare is impacted by the Supreme Court ruling.

We Rose
From Africa’s heart, we rose
Already a people, our faces ebon, our bodies lean, We rose
Skills of art, life, beauty and family
Crushed by forces we knew nothing of, we rose Survive we must, we did,
We rose
We rose to be you, we rose to be me,
Above everything expected, we rose
To become the knowledge we never knew,
We rose
Dream, we did
Act we must

In June, we celebrate Pride Month. Continuing our focus on health equity, we are highlighting concerns around mental health and su***de in the LGBTQIA+* community.

This community faces many forms of discrimination—from stereotyping to bullying, and denial of opportunities to hate crimes. A 2013 survey found that 40% of LGBT adults have been rejected by a family member or close friend; a 2019 survey showed that 86% of LGBTQ youth reported being harassed—or even assaulted—at school. Such ongoing stress significantly impacts mental health.

The LGBTQ+ community faces unique health concerns that are often met lack of experience in being cared for by my physicians.

Doctors who expose themselves to treating patients of marginalized groups will give them a competitive edge that will sustain them for the future. When doctors relate to patients they share the same cultural value, trust, and relationships are build those changes patient outcomes:

Transparency with being connected with highly-rated physicians.
Increased Health Literacy.
Wellness guide for preventive measures as it relates to higher mortality rates.
Be provided with empathic and discrimination-free care.

We are thrilled to announce our New Business Solution to help build culturally competent leaders in healthcare. 🎉

OurHealth platform has now launched new technology to work alongside healthcare professionals who care about treating marginalized populations.🎉

✅2 out of 4 patients that visit your practice are Black, Latino, and/or identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

❌These communities are still at risk for poor health outcomes due to medical disparities.

❌Only 6% of providers are able to care for these communities which limits venerable populations' access to culturally competent care.

✅To help fill in the gap OurHealth new innovative technology will help you analyze Patient Feedback at Scale to Understand How It Impacts Your Healthcare Business and patient population.

✅No need to learn new technology or add another administrative task to your day. Our Health provides hands-on Diversity is Inclusion consultation to help you identify areas of inefficiency that will enable you to gain new business and a new competitive skill set.

Be healthcare's next leader who will inspire change. 🤎💚❤️💛💜🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈⚧

We had the pleasure of partnering with the nonprofit organization B.A.R.E Truth in their monthly initiative of community outreach to the displaced population of Skid Row in Los Angeles, CA.

B.A.R.E Truth and OurHealth share the same mission of assisting the venerable population by connecting them with wellness services to impoverished individuals and families, helping them attain healthy, purpose-driven lives.

By leveraging volunteers from multiple organizations including clinicians and non-clinian staff to provide free health screenings we were able to serve well over 100 individuals. The free health screenings allow those on Skid Row to be provided with preventative care regardless of their socio-economic circumstance.

If you are a local physician or non-clinical staff member who would like to help please visit our website to inquire. Community impact matters.

Sending my prayers to the city of Buffalo. To all the families that were affected by this travesty, and to the Black people who’s safety now feels threatened, adds extra stress and trauma that can have a lasting and harmful affect on your health. This must stop and our communities demand Justice. 🛑

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month. While the experience of being Black in America varies tremendously, there are shared cultural factors that play a role in helping define mental health and supporting well-being, resiliency, and healing. 💜❤️💛💛💙

Part of this shared cultural experience — family connections, values, expression through spirituality or music, reliance on community and religious networks — is enriching and can be a great source of strength and support.🤎

However, another part of this shared experience is facing racism, discrimination, and inequity that can significantly affect a person’s mental health. Being treated or perceived as “less than” because of the color of your skin can be stressful and even traumatizing and the system of racism impacts every factor of our Self Care Components. ❌❌

The Black community, like other communities of color, is more likely to experience socioeconomic disparities such as exclusion from health, educational, social, and economic resources. These disparities may contribute to worse mental health outcomes. In fact, socioeconomic factors can make treatment options less available. In 2022, 11.5% of Black adults in the U.S. had no form of health insurance, limiting their access to proper care and shortening their life expectancy.🆘🆘

⚠️⚠️If you think Medical Racism doesn't exist guess again. The rightful distrust of the Black community is a real fear, a real stigma that descends from decades of poor medical ethics that dates back from slavery and has never been addressed or corrected. Until now,

OurHealth aims to disrupt medical racism by refusing to let the Black community feel as if they will be another Tuskegee Experiment.

We can no longer bear the burden of being faulted by a system that was never designed to include us❌
