In celebrating and , we are spotlighting just *some* of our dozens of outstanding volunteers!
Today, meet Kitty, who received our 2021 Lifetime Service Award for our 45th Anniversary celebration. We asked Kitty four key questions about her experiences volunteering with DVCCC, here's what she had to say:
1. What year did you start volunteering at DVCCC?
This is the easy one - I completed my training in Spring 2004.
2. What inspired you to volunteer at DVCCC?
I had retired early the previous year and was looking for something to do, some way to "give back", to help others who may not have had as many blessings as I had in my life. I had heard of DVCCC and their good work - several years before, I had actually helped paint a room at the Center with 3 other women, an activity set up by my church (this was in the early 90s). I thought this might be an opportunity to help. I had gotten out of an abusive marriage many years earlier, and thought this experience might be helpful.
3. What is one of the most meaningful experiences you have had volunteering?
I had many meaningful experiences volunteering, but I think the most meaningful was facilitating a support group at a local rehab center. Often, one of the women would share something that she had never told anyone before. Like many other survivors, she had been bottling it up inside. Most of them had never shared their situation before, and found out for the first time they weren't the only one. Also, often one of the women would come up at the end of the group and hug me, thanking me for helping her, and saying she was going to get help and look into how to make a change.
4. What are your favorite volunteer activities at DVCCC?
I value DVCCC's work so much that I was happy with any and all things I did. The support group, speaking about DVCCC at local church's Mission activities, speaking at companies, helping at the info table at Women's lunch activities, giving a lecture to nursing students at WCU, helping at the Center and the Phase IV location – anything at all to help DVCCC with it's wonderful work.
