An around the neck and are variations of normal. A true knot is less common but does happen, and is most often found at delivery as all marvel at the miracle. Most of the time the cord vessels are well protected in the thick Wharton's jelly that surround them - it is the rare tight knot that may compress the circulation; this is one of the reasons I teach fetal movement awareness, and the importance of intermittently monitoring baby's heart rate in normal labor. Lets take a tally...whose baby was born healthfully with a cord around the neck? Tight or loose knot in the cord? Breech? It is a real tight rope balance I walk as a ....I feel we need to share the inspiration, the positive stories as well as support those who did not have a healthy outcome, without contributing to the exaggerated fear so very prevalent in today's modern world.
