Thinking about accessorizing your smile? Mouth piercings and tooth gems may look stylish, but they can have a negative impact on your oral health. Here are a few things to consider before getting one:

Piercings, especially on the tongue or lips, can introduce bacteria that may lead to infections. You can also be at risk for more plaque and bacteria buildup. Tooth gems can make it harder to keep teeth clean, allowing plaque to build up around the jewelry, which increases the risk of cavities and gum disease.

They can also cause gum and tooth damage. Jewelry can rub against gums, causing recession or irritation. Hard jewelry, like metal piercings, can even chip or crack teeth.

To keep your smile safe, make sure to clean all jewelry properly, brush and floss carefully, and schedule regular check-ups. Your oral health should always come first.

Coffee fanatic? We all love our daily cup of coffee, but did you know that your favorite brew could be affecting your smile? Coffee is notorious for leaving behind stubborn stains. The dark pigments in coffee can cling to your enamel, causing yellowing over time. So, what can you do to help stop discoloration? Rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth, and brush and floss regularly to maintain a bright smile.

If you already have stains and would like to explore professional teeth whitening options, schedule your appointment at Grabill Family Dentistry today!

If you have a damaged or decayed tooth, our team will usually treat it with an inlay, onlay, or crown. The choice depends on the extent of the damage and your specific needs. Let’s explore the difference:
Dental inlays are restorations that fit within the cusps of a tooth. They are typically used for smaller areas of damage.
Dental onlays cover one or more cusps of a tooth. They are used for larger areas of damage than inlays.
Dental crowns are full caps that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth. They are used for significantly damaged or weakened teeth.

Cavities can form when bacteria in your mouth uses sugar to create acids that wear away your tooth enamel. Once enamel is gone, it does not grow back.

Here are some tips on how to prevent cavities:
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss daily to remove food particles.
- Limit sugary foods and drinks.
- Drink fluoridated water.
- Visit Grabill Family Dentistry regularly for check-ups.

If you suspect you already have a cavity, we can help! Grabill Family Dentistry offers restorative dental care including fillings, crowns, bridges, and more.
