Did you know that people with ADHD have a higher rate of car accidents than people who don't have ADHD? If you consider that fact along with the well-known fact that teenage drivers have a higher rate of car accidents than older adults, then it is easy to see why a driving program developed specifically for teenagers with ADHD could be so valuable. Cincinnati Children's Hospital is now offering such a program. See the blog below about details for the program.

Roadways can be a dangerous place for teen drivers, even more so for those diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This is because those with ADHD may have difficulty sustaining visual attention to the roadway, especially when distracted.

Below is a link to a really good article about the cognitive and psychological benefits of free play for children. The article provides an in-depth explanation of why children benefit so much from increased autonomy to play and interact with peers without constant direction or overview from adults. While this is not to suggest that children should be entirely unmonitored and provided with no guidance, it does strongly suggest that much of the declining child/teen mental health throughout our country may be due in large part to the similar decline that children and teens experience with independence and unsupervised opportunities.

The internet has done wonders for enabling people to have quick access to all kinds of useful information. Among the useful things available is information about medical and mental health concerns. People are able to learn more about various diagnoses, treatment options, and connect with people who have had similar struggles. Online information can help people decide whether they should meet with a mental health professional for an evaluation or treatment. However, there is also a lot of inaccurate or misleading information online, particularly as it pertains to mental health.

Platforms such as TikTok enable people to learn more about ways in which mental health challenges or diagnostic categories may apply to them, but it also can mislead people as most of the videos about mental health topics are not posted by mental health professionals. In these videos, people often talk about their own "symptoms" of a diagnosis, yet in many cases, the symptoms of which they speak are not specific to that diagnosis. Or, people may focus their video on one specific symptom even though most mental health disorders require the presence of several different symptoms.

Below is a very good article from Psychology Today that discusses TikTok's mental health information and how to interpret it.

The social media phenomenon is driving self-diagnosis.

Below is a link to an interesting article showing a correlation between the age at which a child received their first smartphone or tablet and their overall mental health well-being as a young adult. In summary, the study suggested that the younger the age at which a child first receives a smartphone or tablet, the lower they are likely to score in mental health well-being as a young adult. It is worth noting that the study is correlational, meaning that the results do not prove that smart devices are harmful to mental health, but it is certainly worth considering as a contributing factor. However, it should also be noted that, as stated by the American Psychological Association, the needs of every family and the developmental maturity of each child is different. As such, a one size fits all approach may not apply, but the findings from this study certainly are worthy of consideration in deciding when best to introduce your child to their own smart device.
