Talking to kids about tragedy can be really hard. Here are some tips from one of the world’s experts.
Our hearts go out to all the families in this brokenhearted world who are supporting grieving children!

As families grapple with the heartbreak and devastation from the floods this past weekend, we know there are parents and caregivers across the country trying to find the words to talk with their children about safety, loss, and fear. While there are no magic words, we wanted to share a series of resources that might help with finding ones that feel relevant and supportive.

Here is an excerpt from a piece by our Senior Director of Advocacy and Education, Dr. Donna Schuurman:
"While we can’t guarantee to our children that nothing bad will ever happen to them, we can provide assurance that these events are relatively rare, and that we will do everything we can to keep them safe. Children may have many questions about the events, particularly about natural disasters. Answer their questions with language that fits their developmental stage. It’s okay if you don’t know the answer to a question. If it’s a question that might have an answer, offer to look up more information. You can also ask children what they think the answer is as they often have thoughts and ideas they want to share with you. In the case of natural disasters, if your child is fearful of something like that happening in your community, talk with them about the safety plan that you have in place for your family and home. You can also look into what community safety measures are in place and whatever elements are relevant with your children. Many children will be reassured knowing that there are specific, tangible things they and your family can do if something occurs. Some examples include, picking a meeting place, keeping flashlights in every bedroom, talking about where you will keep emergency water and food."

Thanks to Frank Anderson, MD for this powerful reminder. Unpacking grief and trauma is not easy but help is near and healing is always possible!
We have openings….

We live in a world that teaches us to move on quickly. To push through. To stay productive.
To smile, even when we’re hurting.

Maybe you learned early on that there wasn’t room for your pain. That it made others uncomfortable. That it got dismissed, punished, or ignored.

So you adapted.
You shut it down.
You got really good at surviving.

But over time, those survival strategies—numbing, avoiding, over-functioning, pretending—can become prisons.

Maybe overachieving once kept you safe—but now you can’t rest without guilt.

Maybe shutting down helped you survive chaos—but now you feel numb even in moments that should bring joy.

Maybe people-pleasing kept the peace growing up—but now you don’t know what you want or need.

Here’s what I’ve seen again and again: Unattended pain doesn’t disappear.

It burrows deeper—into the body, the nervous system, the way we relate.

It leaks out sideways as anxiety, chronic tension, irritability, disconnection.

It begins to shape how we see ourselves, how we love, and how safe we feel in our own skin—and in the world.

And yet—slowing down to feel can feel terrifying. Especially if no one ever taught you how to feel without judgment or shame.

That’s why curiosity is such a powerful—and radical—act of healing. Curiosity says: “I don’t have to fear this pain. I can learn from it.”

It invites us to sit beside the part of us that’s hurting, rather than trying to silence it.

It might sound like:
✨ “What is this emotion trying to tell me?”
✨ “Where have I felt this before?”
✨ “What part of me is showing up right now?”
✨ “How did this reaction once keep me safe?”

This is the heart of what I guide people through in integrative trauma therapy. Not just symptom relief, but reconnection.

Because when pain finally feels heard, it doesn’t have to build walls. It begins to soften.

And that moment of listening? That’s where healing begins.

It’s not always fast or easy. But it’s honest and real. And it ultimately leads to transformation that lasts.

It’s bereaved parents month. Such devastating losses. We see you. Help is near ❤️💔❤️

It’s bereaved parents month. Such devastating losses. We see you. Help is near ❤️💔❤️

💔 Good morning. It’s July 1st — and most people don’t know what this month means.

It’s bereaved parents month.
And if you didn’t know that… that’s okay.
Most people don’t.

Because we don’t announce it with balloons.
We don’t hang signs on our doors.
We quietly carry the weight of a love so fierce, it outlived its person.

We mark birthdays no one remembers.
We hold invisible hands in busy rooms.
We ache in places words don’t reach.

This isn’t a club anyone wants to join.
It’s one you wake up in when the world tilts and never fully rights itself again.

But here’s the truth about bereaved parents:

We still laugh.
We still find joy in little things.
We still root for our favorite team and hum along to songs in the car.
We are still here.

Every day is a balancing act — between the life we live, and the life we imagined.
Between memories so precious they hurt to hold, and futures we’ll never see.

So this morning — if you know a bereaved parent, say their child’s name.
Not because it’ll make them sad.
But because it reminds them someone else remembers too.

And if you are a bereaved parent — I see you.
I see your courage.
I see your strength.
I see the way you carry your child’s love like an ember you refuse to let burn out.

July is bereaved parents month.
But for us — it’s every month. Every day. Every moment.

A love death could never silence.

May this month be a soft place for your heart.

I.R.
