It was never “just a dog.” Atlas was my Battle Buddy, my therapy, my best friend in the passenger seat of every chapter.
Through the years, and the Mustangs, he rode with me through it all.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the love and support that’s poured in over the last few days. 🥹❤️

When I first posted about needing help to get to Virginia and bring Arlo home, I really had no idea what to expect. Instead, all of you showed up in a way that has me completely humbled. Because of your generosity, we now have what we need to make the trip safely, cover a place to stay, get Arlo set up with his first supplies and care, start his training and exposure, and make sure he has plenty of toys and treats. 😮👏🥰

*Please don’t feel obligated to keep donating - your support has already made this possible, and I’ll use every dollar carefully for this mission and for Arlo’s continued well-being and training.
Atlas brought a community together over the past decade or so, and it feels like his legacy is still at work as we get ready to welcome Arlo into our story. Thank you for loving us so well, and for helping me take this next step.

Arlo Update & A Personal Ask ❤️

Over the past couple of days, quite a few of you have already reached out offering to help with transport or to donate toward my trip to go pick up Arlo. I can’t begin to tell you how much that means to me.

My goal is to travel out to Virginia in person to meet Jill and Clinton, who so generously offered to donate Arlo to be my new best friend and future service dog candidate. I want to be able to look them in the eye, thank them face to face, and give them the hugs they deserve for seeing Atlas’s story and wanting to be part of the next chapter. I fI had the means - I would have already been on the road to Virginia 🏎💨

It’s really hard for me to ask for help. So many of you have already done so much for me over the years, and I’ve always tried to be as self-reliant as possible and take care of my own responsibilities. But the truth is, right now I simply don’t have the means to make this trip and cover the costs that come with starting Arlo’s journey.
That’s also part of why Arlo being gifted to me hits so deeply - it’s arriving at a time when I really needed this kind of hope again.

I’m not naturally good at receiving support, but I’ve also seen firsthand how healing it has been to be part of helping other veterans get the service dogs they need.
I know there is a lot of need in the world right now, and there are many people who are struggling. Not everyone can help, and no one should feel even slightly obligated.

But if you do want to be a direct part of the very beginning of Arlo and my journey together, this is a way you can help make that happen.

For clarity, this is not a charitable donation to The Battle Buddy Foundation.
Any money sent will go directly to me to help fund:
-The trip to Virginia to pick up Arlo
-His initial needs (supplies, vet care, etc.)
-Expenses related to his development and training as a future service dog
-Every bit of support will be used solely for Arlo and his path forward to become my service dog

NEWS

I spoke to a breeder last night. I didn’t know this, but they’ve been following Atlas’s page and our story for about five years and, unbeknownst to me, decided a few weeks ago that they wanted to reach out and help me find a new partner.

Yesterday, on Veterans Day, I saw a post they made briefly mentioning a program where they donate some of their pups to veterans and first responders. I emailed them, explaining my life with Atlas, Ares, and where I am today, and asked to be considered for a future donated puppy. I expected an auto-response and maybe, at best, an email down the road about a litter that might be available sometime next year.

I was wrong.

They called me within an hour. After talking a little more about Atlas, they explained that over three weeks ago they had already decided they wanted to donate a puppy to be my new best friend and had been preparing to reach out to me. After we spoke for a while and I shared more about my relationship with Atlas, Jill and Clinton told me they believe Arlo’s character is very similar to Atlas’s - that he has the same confidence and courage, and that they whole heartedly believe that he would be a perfect fit to be my next best friend.

I still have to work out the logistics for travel, (EDIT* My goal is to go there myself to pick up Arlo, thank them in person, likely hug them, and discuss potential collaboration/partnership opportunities) since they’re north of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia and I’m in Ohio - along with a few other details - but I wanted to share this good news with all of you. ❤️

"I thought most of my healing would come through my partnership with Atlas but I can’t understate how incredible it’s been for me just to be a part of all the other veterans who have been paired with their Battle Buddy Service Dogs through the years. To watch them change, progress and give back to their communities by being a part of other veterans organizations has been a beautiful butterfly effect. Even though Atlas’ passing was hard, the beauty in it was all of the people who had stories to tell about him.”

In 2012, Atlas the Wonderdog, a German Shepherd, provided the inspiration for Kenny Bass and his fellow Marine and friend Joshua Rivers to co-found The Battle Buddy Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping other veterans experience support through trained service dogs.
