Lauren Bruner, one of the last to escape the burning decks of USS Arizona, carried the scars of Pearl Harbor across his body and soul for nearly eight decades. On December 7, 1941, he was struck by enemy fire yet kept fighting until flames engulfed him. Burned over 70% of his body, he climbed through fire and smoke to survive, but his heart never left his ship or the 1,177 brothers entombed within. At the age of 98, Bruner’s ashes were returned to the wreck of Arizona, where he finally rejoined his fallen crew, forever bound to the steel tomb that defined his courage and sacrifice. Lauren Bruner also became the last USS Arizona survivor to have his ashes interred in the wreckage of the ship 🕊️🇺🇸⚓
