With hearts full of love and sorrow, we remember Carlos Mauricio Mairena, Sr., who passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, at MUSC in Columbia, South Carolina, surrounded by the people who meant the most to him—his family. At 56 years old, Carlos leaves behind a legacy of devotion, faith, and unwavering love.

Carlos was born on December 24, 1968, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the cherished son of Olga (Mendoza) Merchant. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he was lovingly raised by Olga and her husband, Maricano Merchant.

In Charleston, South Carolina, Carlos met the love of his life, Monisa Vinay Purnell, and from that moment forward, their hearts were bound together. Married for 34 wonderful years, they built a home overflowing with laughter, faith, and joy, raising three beautiful children and later becoming “Pop-Pop” to his greatest treasures—his grandchildren. Carlos’ love for his family was fierce, steady, and endless.

Carlos served his country with pride in the United States Navy from 1990 to 2000, carrying the values of honor, commitment, and resilience into every part of his life. After his service, he continued to give his best in every role he held—whether at Verizon Wireless, LPL Financial, or the United States Postal Service. No matter where life took him, Carlos touched hearts with his kindness, his humor, and his ability to make everyone feel like family.

He is deeply loved and will be forever remembered by his wife, Monisa; his children, Pierre Omar Purnell, Corlissa Monay Mairena, and Carlos Mauricio Mairena, Jr. (Goretty Sarai Mairena); and his beloved grandchildren, Junie Lilliana Mairena Williams and Penelope Esmeray Mairena, who brought him endless joy as “Pop-Pop.”

Carlos’ memory also lives on through his brothers, Anthony Pérez (Cesiah Johana Pérez) and Yanick Noe Merchant; his brother-in-law, Killis Purnell III; his niece and nephews, Makayla Monique Pérez, Malik Anthony Pérez, and Jevon Purnell; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will carry his spirit forward.

Carlos’ life was a reflection of love in action—love for his family, for his community, and for everyone blessed enough to cross his path. His laughter, his strength, and his embrace will be missed beyond measure, but his legacy will live on in every story, every smile, and every heart he touched.

A memorial service and reception will be held at the family home on October 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather in celebration of Carlos’ life and are encouraged to bring handwritten memories, which will be collected into a tribute scrapbook to honor the beautiful legacy he leaves behind.

Rachel Lorinda Parker McCarn, 81, of Hopkins, SC, passed away on August 22, 2025, a mere 39 days after the death of her husband, Kenneth Rodney McCarn, to whom she was married for 59 years and with whom she lived the military life for over 22 years.
Rachel was born June 29, 1944, in Gastonia, NC to Polly Jane Stanford Parker and James Clanton "Sam" Parker. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harold, and sisters, Aileen and Mary Lois. She is survived by her sister, Aretha, and her brother, Dale (Susie), as well as her children: Jeff (Fabienne), Lisa (Chris), Rodney (Stephanie), and Jason (Laura). Also left to cherish her memory are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Although she worked outside the home at various times throughout her life, Rachel was primarily a stay-at-home mother who was active in the Church of God Servicemen’s Centers wherever she and Rodney were stationed. Among other postings, this included Ft Sill, OK; Ft Bragg, NC; Erlangen, Germany; Ft. Lewis, WA; Ft Jackson, SC; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; and Corzal, Panama. After military life, Rachel remained active in her local church, especially with the Ladies Ministry and the Seniors Group who called themselves The Trees of Righteousness after Isaiah 61:3. Rachel also volunteered at the VA retirement home for over 24 years while raising her family and keeping up the home.
Rachel loved to laugh and have fun. She adored her large family and planned many parties each year to bring them together. This included the annual Parker Christmas Party which is now in its 64th year, as well as a yearly combined birthday party scheduled near July 4th to celebrate her birthday, her brother’s birthday, her husband’s birthday and her niece’s birthday in addition to the birthday of our nation. These get-togethers have been an essential factor in the closeness and interconnectedness of her extended family.
Above all else, Rachel was dedicated to her Lord with an unwavering faith. She was brought up in the church and began ministering at a young age when she would accompany her father on visits to shut-in’s, the sick and those who were grieving. These experiences followed her throughout her life and guided her in developing her own form of ministry to the sick, elderly and destitute wherever she was in the world.
She was a stalwart of faith and loyalty throughout her entire life and she will be greatly missed.
A Homegoing service will be held for Rachel on Friday, September 5th, 2025 at 11 a.m. Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.

Lewis Dillow, born March 28, 1963, Ft. Bragg, NC, survived by mother Immacolata Anela Vassallo Dillow and brother Charles F Dillow, Jr., 3 nieces, 1 nephew, 5 great nieces, 4 great nieces, and twin great great nieces. He was a master Electrician and a Master HVAC Tech. One of his proudest moments and achievements was starting his own business, Lewis Electric Company.
He was a loving son, brother, Uncle, and friend and most of all a great human being who would give you his last beer if you were thirsty, and then send you to the store.
He loved God, familia, friends, Dallas Cowboys, Gamecocks, riding his motorcycle, and life. One of our last conversations while still being alive to speak was, he had some regrets and in our conversations about life, this is what I got…Enjoy Family and mend any broken fences you have with each other, life is too short and time is not promised, each day given is a blessing from God, live, love, and laugh, cherish the moments and soak them up like a sponge. If you call them, they will come, FAMILIA.
