Maternal Health Awareness Day is a reminder that improving maternal outcomes requires action, not just awareness.

Preventable complications remain a leading cause of maternal illness and death, often driven by gaps in access to quality care, delayed treatment, and inequities in health systems. In Iowa, 57% of counties do not have an obstetric facility (AMA) and one third of counties are considered maternity care deserts (March of Dimes).

Evidence shows that early and consistent prenatal care and a strong postpartum follow-up improve outcomes for both mothers and babies, but too many communities in Iowa lack access to nearby maternity care. We need to invest in improving and expanding our maternal health systems because better healthcare leads to healthier moms, healthier babies, and stronger Iowa communities. 💜

Good news! The FDA recently approved extending the duration of use of Nexplanon, a contraceptive arm implant, from 3 years to 5 years!🙌

Clinical trials demonstrated sustained efficacy with no reported pregnancies and no new safety issues. 💜 The study included women with different body weights, including those with higher BMI. The implant worked well across a wide range of body types. 💪

This FDA approval is a great development for people who want reliable, highly-effective, long-lasting, reversible birth control. 👩‍⚕️ If you're interested in talking to a clinician about Nexplanon, find a health center near you by visiting our website: fpcouncil.org/find-a-clinic/

Today is STI Awareness Day, a reminder that s*xual health is an important part of overall health.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common, and many don’t cause symptoms right away, which means someone can have an STI without knowing it. Regular testing, using protection, and having open conversations with partners are key steps in prevention and early treatment.

STIs are treatable, and early detection can prevent complications and protect both you and your partners. Getting tested is not something to fear or feel ashamed of. It’s an act of self-care. 💜

This month, we’re shining a light on prevention, early detection, and informed healthcare choices. Cervical cancer is often preventable with regular screenings, timely care, and education.

Healthy steps can include:
• Learning about cervical health
• Talking with a trusted healthcare provider
• Keeping up with recommended screenings when appropriate
• Staying informed about vaccines that help prevent HPV
• Supporting and encouraging others to prioritize their health

Awareness leads to action and action saves lives. Let’s use this month to learn, share, and take care of ourselves and our communities.

Today, we are recognizing Adam Stark, who recently transitioned off the board after over a decade of service.

Adam served on the FPCI board for 12 years and served as board president from 2020 to 2023. During his tenure, he provided steady leadership and valuable insight, helping the organization navigate challenging times with resilience and vision.

We are deeply grateful for his commitment, wisdom, and lasting contributions to FPCI's mission, and we wish him the best of luck with this next chapter.

This week, we'd like to take the opportunity to honor two of our former board presidents who recently transitioned from being active board members. First up is Hannah Ellis Ackerman!

Hannah joined the FPCI board almost a decade ago and served as our most recent board president. As a former Title X patient, she brought a unique perspective to the board and is a passionate advocate for the program.

Moving forward, Hannah will be transitioning into a new role as an emeritus board member, where she will engage with FPCI board alums while continuing to use her experience to advise and support current board members. We're so excited to continue working with her!

Thank you for everything you've done for FPCI! 💜
