Well, it’s been a hard week. So many of us are watching what is unfolding in our country with dread and despair. Those emotions can overwhelm and render us frozen. In reflection, that is probably the point of it all. The chaos is the point (as is the cruelty). They want us shocked and immobilized. In panic, we don’t plan. We lose hope. We shrink ourselves for survival and we pull away from others. Systems of oppression and those that move the gears of the systems count on it.
That’s why caring for yourself, cultivating joy and building community are acts of resistance as well as vital to our mental health. Joy is expansion and liberating. Community is protective and inspiring. Lean into what brings you joy and to communities that care for you. And please care for yourself. Remember to drink the water, feed yourself, take a break from doomscrolling. Crash out for a moment if you need to and do everything to stay with us. We need you.

Happy Pride! This month, we take a moment (or several) to honor those who fought and marched for us to be safe to celebrate who we are and who we love. We come together in community to create solidarity and live q***r joy openly. We stand proudly as examples of authenticity for our little ones who will carry the future of our community. And we demonstrate the pride and joy that will be the hope for so many who may live in places where it may not yet be safe to be themselves. And we do all that looking fabulous! Love our fabulous community. 🌈 ***r ***rpride ***rjoy

Over the next few days, we are opening the property for existing clients to visit and get a feel for how in-person therapy will be here. For those who can’t make it and for those who have been following this journey, enjoy the virtual tour!

A Sneak Peak! After many more than a year of heavy construction work (and more than 3 years since we last saw them in person), we are on the cusp of welcoming clients back in person. Two more weeks!!!!

Happy Pride! I was reminded today that we must make space to celebrate the beauty and joy in our community. Giving space for joy sustains us through the struggle of living in a world that often labors to strip us of it. Celebrate your moments of Rainbow Joy! If you want to share, leave it in the comments so we can celebrate you too!

In 2013, we opened our practice in a tiny shared suite in Cranston. Over the last decade, our practice has grown and changed in ways neither Heather nor I could have predicted. We are eternally grateful for the folks have invited us on their healing journeys in the last 10 years. Capturing the full extent of this honor is impossible. As we start the next decade, we will be excited to share our new vision for mental health care and continue to honor the gratitude we hold for all of you.

Let’s talk self care. Often, the discussion about self care is highly focused on the individual. We apply individual efforts designed to improved the individual internal experience. Examples like taking some time to yourself to rest or getting some movement in to take care of your nervous system come to mind.
As communal (and often altruistic) creatures, we also have deep need for connection and community. Engaging in community based self care - feeling part of something meaningful and giving to others - is as important as our individual self care.
It’s no secret that the last few years have been challenging for us all. Between family health crises, loss, tons of transitions and the pandemic, I was definitely in need of some meaningful self care, community connection, and quite frankly, a whole bunch of joy.
This fall, I have had the privilege of being part of Girls on the Run as a coach for a elementary school team. The experience was deeply meaningful. I am forever grateful for being welcomed into a amazing community that supports growth and self esteem for kiddos. I am most grateful for the hours of laughter, silly jokes and stories, chaotic playful energy, and the bonds with the kids and my fellow coaches. It was exactly what my soul needed.
Yesterday was our finale 5k. I could not be more proud of our bundled up little runners who braved the cold and pulled along family and friends as they completed their big goal. You all are amazing!
P.S. Girls on the Run Rhode Island is always looking for coaches. If you are interested in volunteering, check out their social media. The organization is fantastic and among the best nonprofits for which I’ve volunteered. GOTR deep values inclusivity, makes a commitment to have programs accessible to any girl who wants to participate, and creates a space that welcomes all kids who identify as girls.

Our final (for this year) outdoor therapy space is under construction. Therapy via telehealth all week and construction all weekend. Our nearly 50 year old bodies are hanging in, which is impressive given the amount of dirt we we’ve moved in the last two weeks. Bonus: we spent yesterday with our favorite crew member. It’s always a good work day when our kiddo is here.

We serve individuals, couples, families and organizations in Rhode Island. We provide psychological care tailored to your needs. Our clinicians practice in a way that honors you as a whole person and the context in which you live. Our goal is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental place for you to explore ways to feel better and to understand your distress. Working together, we will find the path that works best for you. We take a holistic and culturally competent approach that acknowledges the complexity of your life, your experiences and your world.
Overall, our providers hold the fundamental beliefs that:
We each do our best to survive whatever environment we are part of. Occasionally, the things we do to survive are not as effective as they once were and we may need to consider other tools or enhance those that we already have.
Psychological healing is a process unique to the individual. Your path will be very different from another's path. We work to help find your path and take the direction that works best for you.
The greatest predictor of success in therapy is the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist. We believe in cultivating those relationships.
The process of therapy can be a rewarding and challenging endeavor that is easier to navigate when trust and collaboration exists in therapeutic relationship.
We are not the experts on your life. Although we have knowledge about emotional and behavioral health, you have significantly more knowledge about your experience of the world. By joining our knowledge, we work collaboratively to help you meet your goals.
Our clinicians practice from a theoretical framework that blends multicultural theories and awareness with interpersonal theories. How we engage with clients will be influenced by our clients' needs. For example, some clients may want to have more structure in therapy and enjoy tasks. Others may simply wish to have someone to listen as they talk through their challenges. We listen to our clients' wishes and wisdom to help shape the therapeutic experience. Our practice is deeply committed to culturally competent care.
The cornerstone of our practice philosophy is personal growth through affirming care. We support and believe in the inherent strengths of our clients. We value their individual journeys and wisdom. Distress can come from experiences of oppression, discrimination, marginalization, and rigid expectations around the roles we play based on our gender (perceived or self identified), sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, spiritual beliefs, and ability status. We believe there can be healing in exploring this distress.
Wilder Therapy is committed to providing affirming and inclusive services. Our clinicians take pride in offering culturally competent care to traditionally marginalized and underserved groups. We honor the diversity of the human experience. We strive to create a safe space to grow for clients and clinicians of all racial/ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientation, ability statuses and religious/spiritual backgrounds.
