💪🏼Elbow Arthroscopy or having your elbow “cleaned out” is usually indicated for boxers who have "loose bodies" in their elbow joint which restrict their mobility, cause pain and limit their ability to punch.
•
🤔Sound familiar? This is one of the most common injuries in boxing and making the decision to undergo surgery can be daunting and very personal.
•
🫣The language that orthopedics typically use to describe what’s structurally happening can be very scary. That’s why it’s so important to be educated on what these terms mean, recognize that knowing what’s happening structurally isn’t the WHOLE picture, and sometimes surgery isn’t always the answer. The more you know, the better you can advocate for yourself in this important decision.
•
☠️"Loose bodies" are small fragments of bone or cartilage that are floating within the joint space. These small fragments can start off as bone spurs and then get chipped off due to trauma: hyperextension or hyperflexion injuries, falling or even just repetitive wear and tear.
•
❌Loose bodies are not uncommon in boxers and can be seen on x-rays. BUT just because they are present does not always indicate surgery. Often, with a good rehab program, we can restore full range of motion and reduce symptoms.
👉🏻However, if there are persistent symptoms and catching/locking in the joint you made need an elbow arthroscopy.
•
👩🏼⚕️Recovery from this surgery is relatively quick, if uncomplicated, and usually takes about 6-8 weeks.

Stick around for part✌🏻of what rehab might look like before surgery. *Always consult with a healthcare provider first!
