DO YOU HAVE A HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE?
I frequently get patients that present to my office complaining of allergy symptom (nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, possible hives, itching, headaches and even coughing or wheezing), but when an allergist or myself tests them for food or environmental allergies, all the tests come back negative.
These patients are typically suffering from something called histamine intolerance. Histamine is a very important compound in the body and actually helps the body's systems function effectively. It increases blood supply to specific areas of the body, regulates stomach acid, muscle contraction and balances inflammatory mediators in the body.
Most of us are familiar with the actions of histamine as they relate to responses to an allergic reaction whether its inhaled, digested or contact. While histamine has many beneficial physiological effects in the body, too much can lead to problems for people with histamine intolerance.
A person's histamine tolerance varies according to their threshold, or how much histamine their body can tolerate before experiencing symptoms. Histamine intolerance occurs when the level of histamine in the body, exceeds this threshold and the person's ability to break down histamine. Because histamine is not only produced in the body, but is also present in a variety of the foods we eat, individuals with a low threshold may experience symptoms by consuming moderate or low amounts of foods that contain or trigger the release of histamine.
Within the body, histamine is broken down by an enzyme called DAO. Normally DAO can easily degrade ingested histamine but some patients may not make enough DAO or they are eating an excessively high amount of high histamine foods and symptoms can emerge.
COMMON HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE SYMPTOMS:
headache, migraines, vertigo, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, low or high blood pressure, flushing, hives, itching, diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, gas and heartburn.
HISTAMINE RICH FOODS:
fish, cheese, sauerkraut, smoked meats, tomatoes, ketchup, soy sauce, alcoholic beverages (beer, wine), chocolate, cocoa
FOODS THAT LIBERATE HISTAMINE
shellfish, nuts, sees, wheat germ, buckwheat, black and green tea, spinach, eggplant, avocado, vinegar, mustard, pickles, olives, certain fruits (strawberries, cherries, bananas, pineapple, kiwi, papaya, mango, raspberries, pears, dried fruits and all citrus fruits.
What I found personally, because I have a slight histamine intolerance myself, is that I can eat most of these foods without a problem but if I eat certain combinations of these foods at the same time while lets say my seasonal allergies are acting up, I tend to get more symptoms.
A quick story about how I discovered that I had a histamine intolerance:
About 6 years ago my wife made a recipe that she found online called avocado pudding. It contained of course avocado but also cocoa powder and a couple other ingredients and after I ate it I immediately felt my sinuses fill up, my eyes start to water, and my throat got very itchy and swollen. I immediately thought that I was having an allergic reaction but couldn't understand it because I had always been able to eat chocolate and avocado in the past without any of these symptoms. For me, the combination of these 2 high histamine containing foods put me over my threshold and I developed symptoms. Once I learned about histamine intolerance, it all made sense to me and now I'm more cautious about my food combinations and when I go out to eat or eat over someone's house and have less control over exactly what is in my food, I simply take 2 capsules of my Aller-relief product and I do just fine.
One last thing to note - in my practice I have found that patients with chronic headaches and migraines tend to suffer from histamine intolerance and watching dietary choices (avoiding allergenic, sensitive and high histamine foods) and certain food combinations, working on the GI tract (healing leaky gut) and taking enzymes and probiotics, chronic headaches and migraines can be eliminated by almost 100%.
