Bridge Family Center

Bridge Family Center EVERY FAMILY. EVERY CHILD. EVERY TIME. The Bridge was founded in 1969 to meet the needs of West Hartford community youth who were engaged in high-risk behavior.

Over the next few years, the Bridge expanded its outreach efforts, opened a shelter for runaway and homeless youth, and began to work directly with the schools. Today the Bridge is a comprehensive, regional nonprofit agency offering a broad range of services to children, youth, and families in the Greater Hartford area, with particular attention to serving those at risk. The mission of the Bridge Family Center is to foster the courage and strength in children and families to meet life's challenges and build fulfilling lives.

We are in need of large area rugs to furnish our Youth In Transition apartments - our rooms are 14x10, so we are looking for the largest rugs possible. If you have a rug you'd like to donate, please reach out to Doreen at dtarascio@bridgefamilycenter.org.

Our Youth In Transition program is a critical initiative for runaway and homeless youth, incuding pregnant and parenting teens and their children. YIT helps our youth achieve self-sufficiency as they transition to adulthood.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning for our 37th annual Breakfast on the Bridge! Each we cherish this time with our community, celebrating the work we do together. This year, we had the honor of awarding both the George C. Hastings Award and the Build No Fences Award.

State Representative Tammy Exum was awarded the George C. Hastings Award for her work in championing mental health and disability rights. Our Executive Director, Margaret Hann, referred to Tammy as the Bridge’s “guardian angel”, remarking that Tammy is always the first to reach out with support in times of need.

We surprised Hall High School counselor Katie Bond with this year’s Build No Fences Award. Of the award, Hall Principal Sarah Isaacs said “The Build No Fences Award honors individuals who break down barriers and create inclusive, supportive communities for your people. I can’t think of a more perfect way to describe Katie Bond…Katie is deeply committed to supporting all students – both through her direct work with individuals and by considering the broader impact of student support programming.”

Thank you to all who participated this morning and congratulations to Tammy Exum & Katie Bond!!

Talking about your feelings, especially when you're feeling depressed or suicidal, is incredibly important. Keeping painful emotions bottled up can make them feel even more overwhelming and isolating. Opening up to someone for support, whether it’s a trusted friend, family member or mental health professional can provide relief. Martin Smith, LMFT discusses why seeking help when you are feeling hopeless is so important. https://www.bridgefamilycenter.org/news/seeking-help-when-feeling-hopeless

Last week we shared a special visit with Governor Lamont and Office of Early Childhood Commissioner Beth Bye. During a press conference at our Family Resource Center, we celebrated the newly-established Early Childhood Education Endowment that has already expanded preschool opportunities for 500 Connecticut's families. 1,000 additional child care/preschool spaces will be made available in January 2026. Our thanks to Governor Lamont, Commissioner Bye, and the West Hartford state delegation for creating a pathway for Connecticut families to have access to high-quality early childhood care.
