Movement Monday is here...with a little twist!

CT got anothee giant flipping snow storm last night so we were shoveling, snowblowing and clearing cars today!

So if you're somebody dealing with the snow today, try these out!

Try out these 4 stretches to get loosened up a little bit!

1. Sitting trap stretch. Hold onto the surface and bring your neck and head to your shoulder on an angle in the opposite direction. You can pull gently on your head for more of a stretch.

2. Side to side back rotation. Lay on your back, keep your core tight, knees bent, and slowly bring your legs in one direction until you feel a stretch. Hold and then go in the opposite direction.

3. Piriformis stretch. Lay on your back, keep your core tight and bend up your knees. Cross one ankle over the opposite knee and gently pull your knee towards your opposite shoulder.

4. Standing back extensions. Stand and squeeze your core tight. Place your hands on your low back and lean backwards up and over your back. Don't hold but move back and forth instead.

If you try these out, let me know how they go! Remember to keep your core tight the whole time you shovel, don't lift too much at once, and take breaks!

Stay safe everybody!

LWL is back with some Tuesday Tips for you!

This one is HUGE! I can't tell you how many times I hear someone say "No pain, no gain, right?!" And I cringe every time! It actually isn't right!

Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is WRONG, not that you are pushing hard enough or that you need to push harder! It is a signal that something is wrong. It could be that you are in the wrong position, your core isn't engaged enough, the weight is too heavy, you have an injury, the exercise is too hard right now, or a number of other things. No matter the reason, there is something going on though that your body is telling you that it is wrong and it needs to be changed.

There is a difference between PAIN and SORENESS. Soreness in your muscles can be okay, depending on what you are doing and what has been going on. It is so important though to know the difference between the two. If you push through pain, you are at a higher risk of injuring yourself and causing a "setback". Pushing through muscle soreness, can be okay, but it is important to know what is going before you do that too. Most importantly, it is important to know the difference between what pain and what soreness is and how they feel, that way you know when it is okay to push and when it is not the best idea.

If you don't know the difference between pain and soreness, that is the first step in setting you up for success in your PT and in your overall health and wellness journey. A PT can teach you what the difference is, so if you are unsure, ASK today! We want to help and answer questions and help you be set up for success and crush those goals! The biggest thing is KNOWING what pain is and KNOWING what gain is! Just because you can push through pain, doesn't mean you are making any gains in your fitness journey or your activities that you are working towards - you have to know what that truly is! Again, as a PT we can help you figure out all of these nuances and pieces of everything! That is what we are here for!

So remember - KNOW Pain, KNOW Gain is the way to go !

Happy Funny Friday!
In the medical world - when you go see a medical provider, you are generally given a "diagnosis code" based on what you are being seen for.

There is literally a whole giant book/online database of diagnoses known as the International Classification of Diagnoses or "ICD" for short. Back on October 1, 2015 they released the new version: ICD-10 - which provided medical providers with the normal medical codes and a much wider range of codes to choose from. It all has to do with billing and reimbursement and blah blah blah.

And it's annoying because I HATE that people have to have a so-called diagnosis anyways (YOU ARE MORE THAN A DIAGNOSIS!!!)

BUT: With ICD-10 came some HYSTERICAL and RIDICULOUS codes that can ACTUALLY be used by medical providers!

So for Funny Friday - I have decided to give you access to some of the most ridiculous ones!

For today's ICD-10 Ridiculous Code: We have: Y93.D1: Activity, knitting or crocheting.

I mean realistically, this could actually happen. We could have finger, hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries from repetitive movements and sitting in one position/posture for a long period of time. Or sitting in that position, depending on how you are sitting can cause back pain or hip pain too.

And on the other hand, there is something called Rage Crocheting and Rage Knitting - which is a great coping mechanism for some people! But if you get too violent, maybe this is what it means??

Either way! Happy Funny Friday!

Tuesday Tips is back at you today - talking about social media and communicating with your physical therapist about what you see! (Are you sensing a theme here about how important it is to communicate with your PT?!)

There are a lot of "experts" on all of the different social media platforms. But unfortunately, literally anybody can call themself an expert in anything. We can't blindly trust all of these people who are on social media, just because it looks good or sounds good, or may seem like a cool idea!

If you're working with a PT, and/or you are dealing with any type of pain or injury, please talk to your PT (or any other actual movement expert) BEFORE you try anything new! Especially if you are in PT and your PT has given you a specific home exercise program to do - there is a reason they have given you that, and if you are doing something completely different and are not telling us, we won't know what's going on if something gets worse!

I love when clients come to me and say "I saw this on FB/IG/TT and wanted to talk to you about it". Sometimes it is a great idea. Sometimes it is a great idea, but not yet - your body may not be at a point where you can safely complete that exercise without potentially hurting yourself. Sometimes they are WAY off base and it is a terrible idea, even though it looks like it could be fun it is not the best for you. Maybe you can do a specific exercise, but just need a modification to it. There are so many scenarios and it is so important to talk to your PT about what you see before trying it.

Remember, these so called experts have no idea who you are. They actually could be very qualified to be posting ideas (I do it sometimes too) but they don't know YOU! They don't know your specific symptoms or goals or pain levels or movement patterns or anything at all about you. So while in theory a specific exercise may be good for a specific injury or pain point, it does not always mean that it will be helpful for you!

YOU ARE UNIQUE! Your PT should be unique and specific to you too! So please always talk to your physical therapist!

The Live Without Limits Wellness Pack is now available!

I can't tell you how many times I recommend somebody to buy a product that they will benefit from having as a part of their PT journey and to be able to use for their home exercise program! And as "easy" as it is to buy things online nowadays, it is still one more thing to think about. And sometimes it becomes multiple steps because you may not need all of the things at once so then you have to buy things multiple times.

Now - we are eliminating that process! LWL is offering this new product - the LWL Wellness Pack that has a few different products that I am always recommending! It is a one time purchase and the drawstring backpack is included and there are a couple of other small goodies in the bag too!

The things that are included are:
1) Stretching Strap - helps you to complete all of your stretches appropriately and without having to strain other muscles while trying to complete the stretch.
2) Myofascial Release Ball - helps you get into those tricky areas of knots and tightness to help provide you relief.
3) Biofreeze - a topical cold solution that you can put on areas of pain and tightness to help you to relieve some of your pain throughout the day without having to sit with an ice pack!
4) Loop Resistance Bands - all levels of resistance included - used for all kinds of strengthening for upper and lower body and the back/core.
5) Long Resistance Bands - all levels of resistance included - also used for strengthening of the upper and lower body and the back and core and provides a different challenge than the loop resistance bands.
6) Kinesiotape - can be used for all different kinds of pain and injuries - I will teach you the ways to tape that you need so you know what you are doing on your own!

If you are not a current client of LWL that is okay too - this backpack can still provide you a huge benefit to your at home mobility and workout routines! Everyone can benefit from one! If you would like one, shoot me a message today!

I'm so excited to be able to start offering this for everybody!

Tuesday Tips coming in hot!

PLEASE, and I mean I am begging you, PLEASE ASK YOUR PHYSICAL THERAPIST QUESTIONS!!!

This is a very short list of some of the things that you can ask your PT at any session that you have with them!

You will naturally have so many questions come up as you are working with your PT during your healing journey - we expect it! As a PT, I get a little worried when people don't have any questions about what we are doing and what they are doing and what is going on!

The human body is a very complex thing and having an understanding of what the heck is going on while you are trying to deal with an injury, can actually help you to heal a little better. Sometimes we need an understanding in order to believe that we can actually get better.

There are NO dumb questions when it comes to PT and your healing! You are not the expert in this situation (although you are the expert of your body!) so if you have a question or just want a better understanding or are questioning anything - please ask us! If you are holding back and not asking us and not communicating with us, we can't help you to the best of our ability!

No question is too much - if I don't know the answer (I don't know everything!) I will for sure research it and get you the best answer possible!

So please please please ASK YOUR QUESTIONS! We are here to help you however we can! And if you think of something in between sessions that you want to ask - you can reach out to me and ask too! If you want to wait - write it down so you don't forget, but either way, ask your questions!

A little DID YOU KNOW for The Big Game today!

Did you know that every NFL team is required to have a physical therapist on their staff? Why? The short answer - injury is likely to happen when you have a bunch of grown men running, throwing, kicking, and tackling each other - so you need an expert and professional who knows what they are doing to keep the players as healthy as possible!

What does a PT do for each NFL team more specifically?

They help prevent injuries to keep the players as healthy as possible and keep them from hurting themselves.

They help focus on explosive power for players so that they can be as powerful, strong, and healthy as possible for each movement in each practice and game.

They help tailor specific programs for each position of the game. Each position has different requirements and because of that, different focuses on what needs to be strongest and most powerful and what each player needs to be good at. With positions being different, their programs need to be different too, including recovery and injury prevention.

They also help with all of the common injuries (and less common ones) that occur during practice, training, and games. The overall goal is to help to keep each player healthy, pain free and injury free but when those injuries do inevitably happen, the PT is there to help to rehab the players as effectively and efficiently as possible. If an injury happens, PT and healing become that player's full time job and the PT is right there with them for the ride!

Anyways! Enjoy the game and go sports!

Happy Funny Friday!

As somebody who has had carpal tunnel - this seems pretty legit to me!!!

Did you know that if you often wake up in the morning with your thumb, index, middle, and half of your ring finger numb - you may be dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome? You can also develop weakness in your hand, and pain in your whole arm, up to your shoulder.

Carpal tunnel is a common issue because of our lifestyles with computers and texting on our phones and being on our phones so much. There are a lot of things that we can do to help to prevent these symptoms though! If you are dealing with, or think you are dealing with, any of these symptoms/carpal tunnel, reach out today! LWL can help! Dr. Katie has also dealt with it and it is brutal but you can feel so much better!

In the mean time - run away from your computer and phone as much as you can!
