Chronic stress exhibits its negative effects through three main mechanisms:
- Increased production of stress hormones like cortisol
- Increased production of adrenalin
- Increased propensity to engage in negative health behaviors—such as smoking, drinking alcohol, and poor dietary habits —as a coping mechanism
 
All three mechanisms ultimately lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and vascular damage.

The best way to prevent heart and brain disease is through a healthy lifestyle. Some of these are:
- Exercise and stay active.
- Ensure you have normal blood glucose levels.
- Don't smoke.
- Make sure your blood pressure is in check.
- Eat a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean Diet, which focuses on plants, healthy fats, lean meats, and whole grains.
-Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night

The Greater New York City Black Nurses Association (GNYCBNA) chapter is pleased to collaborate with Gentlemen's Factory to offer this virtual presentation on self-care on Wednesday, December 15th at 8 PM. Although self-care is a growing topic, it is not discussed as much for men of color. Join a panel of Black male health and wellness professionals to facilitate the discussion on promoting self-care methods to heal, live and walk in confidence, and live an overall healthy lifestyle, mentally, emotionally, and physically.
