When it comes to healing chronic inflammation, a little movement goes a long way. Just 20 minutes of gentle exercise (including walking!) is enough to boost your immune system—and help reduce inflammation.

Living with a chronic or invisible illness is incredibly challenging. And advocating for yourself in the healthcare system can be difficult, but it shouldn’t be, because it’s essential for getting the care you need to manage your condition.

Here are 3 things you can do to advocate for yourself:

Shop around. Make a list of questions and traits you’re looking for in a doctor, and if someone doesn’t meet those parameters, keep searching until you find someone who does.
Ask questions. Before going to an appointment, reflect on what’s important for you to know and which questions you want to be answered by your doctor.
Name your needs. Consider what you’re currently struggling with and the specific ways others can help.

No one knows what it’s like to be in your body more than you. Remember that next time you need to advocate for yourself.

We all know walking is good for us, but just how good is it? Research shows walking just 3,800 steps a day is enough to reduce your risk of dementia by 25%.

And not only can it reduce your risk of dementia, but it can also soothe chronic inflammation.

Inflammation is when your body responds to an infection and chronic inflammation is when your body produces high levels of immune cells for a long period of time. This can be triggered by autoimmune diseases, weight changes, insomnia and more, but studies have shown that regular movement such as walking, yoga or other mobility exercises can help.

As temperatures hit 90+ degrees Fahrenheit across the country this week, it’s important to ensure you stay safe. Not only is extreme heat uncomfortable, but 90+ degree weather can also have a negative impact on our health.

Along with staying indoors and drinking plenty of water (about 2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men), experts recommend wearing light and loose-fitting clothing, wetting your skin with a damp cloth, and using lightweight bed linens.

And while you're drinking your water today, consider adding some lemon. It’s not just for flavor; it also promotes gut health. For more information, click here: https://tinyurl.com/y8d4xfus

So what are the Four Tendencies and how can we use our Tendency to make our health habits stick, for good? This was exactly what and Parsley founder and co-CEO discussed during our event at the NYC Center last month.

Upholder - Meets outer expectations. Meets inner expectations
Questioner - Resists outer expectations. Meets inner expectations
Obliger - Meets outer expectations. Resists inner expectations
Rebel - Resists outer expectations. Resists inner expectations

Example 1: 50% of people don’t pick of their prescriptions from the pharmacy. Why? A Rebel might want to refuse the identity of “being sick” and taking the medication would be an admission of the identity. Resisting inner and outer expectations.

Example 2: An Obliger who’s in physical therapy will perform the exercises regularly because they are expected to by their physical therapist. However, if the physical therapist says “I don’t expect you to do this every day” the Obliger may stop all together, because the outer expectation has been removed.

So then the question is, how do we get people to change their behavior?
One solution may be to change our delivery.
For example when rubin works with fitness trainers, she realizes that many of their clients are Obligers. So instead of ending the session with “I’ll be here next week” a change might be “I’ll see you here next week”. The second option creates the outer expectation, because someone will be expecting you.
Check out to learn more about the Four Tendencies.

And if you’re looking for more ways to stick to healthy habits, head to our link in bio for 5 tips for creating lasting habits.

This isn’t to say that these medications—Zoloft, Prozac, Xanax, and Ambien —aren’t powerful tools that have an important place in our world. They do, and we prescribe them; they can be lifesaving.

However, we have been able to help our patients resolve or improve long standing mental or emotional health issues, often without medication. In fact, we've been able to reduce patient reliance on psychiatric drugs by 47 percent.
