✨ Home funerals are Authentically Imperfect. ✨

That laundry basket in the background? Totally fine.
Your dog curling up nearby? Beautiful.
No need for a black suit or polished shoes - come as you are, because that’s exactly who your loved one knew and cherished.

Home funerals aren't about formality. They're about presence, connection, and love.

They're about gathering in the spaces we already know, surrounded by favorite books, familiar smells, and quiet moments that don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful.

Home funerals create an intimate, familiar space to honor the person who has died.
They offer time to slow down, gather close, and say goodbye in a way that feels personal and grounded, not performative.

Home funerals…. legal in every state in the US and steeped in time-honored death care practices, but few are aware of this ceremonial funeral practice. We know, they aren’t for everyone, but they may be the perfect way to say goodbye for some.

It’s how we used to care for the dead before embalming and the funeral profession as we know it today became mainstream. Caring for the dead and holding a small, intimate home funeral creates the space for our hearts, minds and bodies to step into grief. Taking an hour or two to honor the deceased in an authentic way before they are in the care of the funeral professionals is a loving way to say goodbye.

Yes, enlisting the help and guidance of a death doula or end of life guide is highly recommended as caring for the dead can be tricky. The laws vary by state, in some states you’ll need a licensed funeral director to assist with a home funeral, here in California that’s not the case. Connecting with a knowledgeable death doula can help streamline the process.

Home funerals are common in many other countries, and gaining popularity in the US 🩷
Crafting an end of life ceremony that authentically reflects the life you lived is important, and a home funeral is an easy way to do just that!

Yes, The Death Network is an end-of-life collective—but we’re also so much more! Our site is packed with current, relevant content that helps people navigate death, dying, and grief in real life, including one of the questions we hear all the time:

🤷‍♀️ What should I wear to a funeral?

With summer on the horizon, we’re revisiting the evolving norms around funeral attire for women—because times have changed, and so have the expectations. From relaxed fits to soft colors, respectful doesn’t have to mean rigid anymore.

📸 Fun fact: the models in our collage? Those are my (Penny) sisters and nieces ❤️ I have the most supportive family! Every outfit was pulled straight from their closets, because today’s funeral fashion is more about authenticity and intention than rigid rules.

💀💬 We heard the call to go deeper!

After more than a year of hosting Death Cafes, one thing became clear:
People are craving more!

Not support.
Not therapy.
But honest, guided conversation about death and dying - with folks who get it.

💫 So we created something new 💫

Introducing...
The Death Network Discussion Group
A monthly gathering for the death-curious, the conversation-seekers, and anyone who believes death deserves more than silence.

Here’s what to expect:
⏳Guided discussions hosted by a team of experienced death workers
⏳ A welcoming space to explore death through a different lens
⏳Each month features thought-provoking prompts to spark deeper conversation
⏳ Not a workshop, not a class—just real talk in real time

This isn’t a replacement for Death Cafe (we’ll still be hosting those!)
it’s just something deeper for those who are ready for it.

🕊 Come curious, leave connected!
We’ll be gathering in a sacred space - the peaceful yurt at Sweetwater Zen Center where presence and openness come naturally.

🏳‍🌈💀 What is Q***r Death Network? It's a community space dedicated to exploring end-of-life care and options through a q***r lens so that you can design your end-of-life journey as authentically as you’ve lived your life.

This month, we’re diving deep into the ways identity and gender are reflected (or not) on the California death certificate.

We’ll unpack how systems can sometimes erase who we are — and explore practical ways to ensure our truth is honored even after we’re gone.

Come learn, connect, and be part of a conversation about living — and dying — authentically.

🗓 When: May 4 5:00 pm
📍Where: Bravo Family Mortuary 4427 Rainier Ave. San Diego (Mission Valley)
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Who: Q***r folks + allies exploring end-of-life care with heart and intention.

💗 Let’s make sure the story told at the end reflects the life we actually lived.

Did you know... we gather 5 times EVERY month to talk about the stuff that often gets pushed aside — grief, death, and dying — because we believe these conversations matter.

Whether it’s an open-hearted chat at Death Cafe, a succulent swap in the park (where we also share our grief stories), Q***r Death Network or healing Kundalini yoga, we’re here to normalize what it means to be human — and embrace death as a natural part of life. We hope to see you soon!

👏 All of our events are free.
🥰 Everyone is welcome.

📣 Exciting news!
Our founder, Penny, was featured in SD Voyager magazine, where she shares her journey of embracing mid-life career changes and stepping into death care.

The Death Network was born from Penny’s realization that many end-of-life options are inaccessible within the current funeral industry. With half of funeral directors set to retire in the next five years, the landscape is going to change. Plus, a growing interest in natural death care and greener disposition options makes this the ideal time to integrate these alternatives.

Her vision is to educate the community on their choices and collaborate with funeral homes ready to expand their offerings—because our end-of-life experience should authentically reflect how we lived.
