It’s true that there is opportunity in every challenge, but how do we access it? Through better questions, the subconscious mind will continue searching for an answer until it finds one. Have you ever had an experience where you were drawing a blank on something you knew you knew? Then the next day the answer pops into your head? This is because you asked yourself and the mind kept processing even when you’re done consciously thinking about it, until it came up with the answer. Your mind will do this with anything you ask. If I ask, when a challenge arises, “why does this always happen to me?” Or, “why can’t I make it happen?” The mind will find answers. “You’re not good enough,” “the economy is bad,” “the systems rigged,” etc... These answers actually presuppose that you can’t do it and so your mind stops looking for solutions. Now you’re stuck. Instead, ask yourself better questions. “What’s great about this?” “How can I use this?” Now the subconscious will continue searching for these answers until it finds a solution. These questions cause the mind to presuppose there is a solution and so it won’t stop until it finds it. Confusion is the subconscious mind trying on new ideas. When you go to learn something, try something or produce something new, this is not known to all the current beliefs and programs in your subconscious mind. If it was, it wouldn’t be new. Since it doesn’t match and the mind doesn’t like change to begin with, it’s like you’re throwing a wrench in the gears. It doesn’t mix well. Eventually, the mind gets familiar enough with it that it starts integrating the new information and ideas with the existing ones and learning, improvement and results follow. Those “aha” moments and “things clicking” are the smoothing out of the new and old programs. So confusion is a positive thing. Getting started can be a challenge sometimes because the mind perceives the effort as painful and therefore avoids it. This is how procrastination starts. Since the mind moves towards pleasure and away from pain, the way to overcome procrastination and actually get started is to set up an outcome that promises more pleasure than the perceived pain of taking action. Since the mind has evolved to avoid pain approximately three times more than it’ll move towards pleasure, make sure that your outcome promises much more pleasure than the amount of perceived pain of ex*****on. Small changes may seem mundane, but trying to change too quickly will scare the subconscious mind and cause it to resist. The mind evolved in the wild and only cares about keeping you alive. It knows that whatever you have now is safe because you’re still alive and so the subconscious doesn’t want it to change. The minds tendency to keep everything the same is called homeostasis. In order to break though homeostasis you must pace and lead the mind. You do this through your mental conditioning. For instant if I make $50k a year, I begin imagining making $100k a year. I visual this goal until it feels real. This will make the mind a little uncomfortable at first but doing this repeatedly starts to familiarize the mind with it. Sense it’s familiar it’s no longer dangerous to the mind and so the mind allows ideas to start flowing, motivation increases, you take more action and suddenly you make $100k per year. Now you imagine $200k per year. Keep using the same process. Now, if you started at $50k a year and decided I want to make $10million a year. That’s way too far outside the minds comfort zone and it would be very difficult for the mind to allow you to take appropriate action towards it. It’s too much of a threat. Faith is really the subconscious reality being stronger than any external reality. Because we can imagine, we can create these internal realities. When we imagine our goal for instance, and we feel how the outcome will feel as if it has already happened, we have set it up in the subconscious as a new reality. Doing this repeatedly, further familiarizes the subconscious with it and allows it to get comfortable with the idea. Now that the subconscious is familiar with it, it will begin producing it externally through your actions. This is how we build faith. By feeling our outcome in advance, absent any doubt of negative emotions. One way to be certain you have built faith is to imagine the worst thing happening as you try achieving your goal. If you can imagine the worst thing happening and still only feel the positive feelings your desired outcome gives, then you have faith. The mind is certain regardless of the situation that your goal is inevitable and so it it continues moving towards it. Positive in this instance really means certain. If you’re certain of your out come, your mind is still locked into it like a gps point. The subconscious will continue scanning every option until it finds the best action to take that will continue moving you towards your outcome. Much like when you take a wrong turn on a trip. The gps scans all the possible routes to take to get you back on track to your destination and chooses the most efficient option. If instead you are negative in this situation, meaning uncertain, it’s as if you’re adding a change in destination as an option for the mind to scan. Since this option tends to be less painful in the short term, the mind will often take it and end up in a different place than you desired. So continue conditioning your goals into your mind every day so when these problems arise your subconscious is too certain of the outcome to allow for an alternative option and only figures out solutions that keep you moving towards your desired outcome.

Hesitation is the minds strategy to help you avoid potential pain, the pain of failing and all the negative beliefs and emotions that it would trigger. This is a valid and effective strategy for the short term. The problem is the long term outcome. Those same beliefs and emotions that the mind is able to avoid now, coming screaming to the surface in the long term. When ten years has gone by and your still dealing with the same problems you were a decade ago and have made no advancements in any area of your life, that’s when the emotions catch up. The way to override this hesitation strategy is two fold. First imagine what it would be like ten years from now and things haven’t changed or are even worse. Exaggerate it so it feels bad. Since the mind avoids pain three times more than it moves towards pleasure we want to utilize this pain as leverage. Second form an idea of what you’ll be like ten years from now having made the changes you desire. Exaggerate this until it feels amazing. Now when the mind tries to run the short term strategy, the long term pain is conditioned in the mind to be worse than the short term pain of trying and the long term pleasure is conditioned in to be more than the short term pleasure. In this way we tip the scale in favor of action, growth and ultimately the attainment of our goals. Makes this a daily practice to make sure the conditioning is strong enough to move you forward.

When you imagine your goals every day, be sure to imagine all aspects of it. Exp.. if I were a basketball player and I wanted to play in the NBA, I’d imagine game winning shots and rebounds and all kinds of success on the court. But what about press conferences, media obligations, contract negotiations, etc... If these things are too unfamiliar in the mind, and you’re about to reach your goal, different fears can get triggered causing you to pull away and sabotage just before making it. This is called the fear of success. So start as soon as possible, in your daily visualizations of your goals, to imagine all the aspects of what it would be like to have it. This gives your mind time to become familiar with these different aspects so when the time comes, the mind is already comfortable with these different parts and won’t want to run away.

Without intention there can be no manifestation. Intention sets the new reality in the mind, absent any doubt. When this happens, the reticular activating system begins deleting, distorting and generalizing in a way that causes you to act effectively towards your outcome. Holding the intention continues the successful actions until the internal reality you created in your mind is now reflected in your external world. So set your intention every day and take action through that intention and see what happens!

Procrastination is a strategy of the mind, the purpose of which is to help you avoid pain. Putting off doing anything from cleaning your room, going to the gym, doing the dishes etc... is really your mind deciding that doing those things will be more painful than not doing them. The problem is that this is a short term strategy that leads to long term pain. Adopting a do it now mentally, even in little things, will spill over into bigger things, as the mind has a tendency to generalize its strategies across as many areas as it can. Your mind gets used to taking action because the medium to long term pleasure it experiences starts to outweigh the short term pain. So start small with little things. Adopt the “Do it now,” mentality with an eye towards your long term outcome and watch it spread to all areas of your life.

When you think about giving up, think back to when you were a baby. You learned how to walk around one years old. No one gave you walking lessons. You didn’t give yourself a month or two before you’d call it quits. Stumbling or falling down didn’t mean “I can’t do this” “I’m stupid.” You just fell in love with the idea of walking and did it until you mastered it. So quitting, then is a learned behavior and is driven by the negative meaning your mind has formed about yourself, your capabilities, your possibilities, etc... Next time you fail and feel like giving up, check in on the emotion in the moment and the belief around that emotion. The meaning your mind gave this feeling when failure occurs is the culprit and the behavior of giving up is your mind’s strategy helping you relieve that feeling and push down that belief. By riding yourself of these beliefs in these moments, allows for everything to become feedback instead of failure, the strategy of quitting is no longer needed, and like that baby, you can stay in love with the idea of your goal and continue to do until it’s reached.
